When Rules Break: Sphinx vs. Manion

The battlefield was perfect.

A polished arena of glowing hexes stretched beneath a twilight sky—an ordered world where every clash had meaning, every move had a rule. Energy hummed in quiet anticipation as a Bakugan card snapped open.

“Stand ready!” a distant voice called.

With a flash of light, Manion emerged—wings unfurling in a radiant sweep, golden armor gleaming. He landed with controlled grace, talons clicking softly against the arena floor. His eyes scanned the space, sharp and focused.

Everything was as it should be.

Until it wasn’t.

A sound—low, guttural, wrong.

The sky fractured.

Not metaphorically. It cracked, like glass under pressure. Dark veins spread across the glowing dome above, pulsing with something ancient… something hateful.

Manion crouched.

The air turned cold.

Then—

SHATTER.

The sky broke open, and from the void beyond, something fell.

A monstrous shape crashed into the arena, ripping through the carefully structured field. Hex panels shattered. Light flickered. The rules—those invisible laws that governed everything—collapsed.

From the dust rose the Sphinx.

Its massive wings unfurled, black as night. Its skeletal face glowed with crimson markings, empty eyes burning with silent hunger. Snow-like ash drifted from its body as it exhaled a low, echoing growl.

This was no summoned opponent.

This was intrusion.

Manion stepped forward, wings flaring.

This creature… it did not belong.

The Sphinx tilted its skull-like head, studying him—not as an opponent, but as prey.

Then it lunged.

Manion reacted instantly.

He leapt into the air, wings slicing through the broken atmosphere as claws swiped beneath him. The Sphinx’s strike shattered what remained of the arena floor, debris flying like shrapnel.

Manion countered.

A precise dive—talons aimed at the Sphinx’s spine. His strike landed clean, sparks flashing against Grimm armor.

But the Sphinx didn’t flinch.

It twisted mid-motion with terrifying speed, jaws snapping shut just inches from Manion’s wing. The force of its movement alone sent a shockwave rippling outward.

This wasn’t a battle.

This was a hunt.

Manion landed, sliding across fractured ground.

Something was wrong.

There were no commands. No ability cards. No structured energy flow.

No rules.

The Sphinx charged again.

Manion adapted.

He launched forward—not with calculated turns, but instinct. Claw met claw as he parried a strike, redirecting the Sphinx’s momentum. He spun, wings driving him upward before slamming down with a crushing blow.

The Sphinx staggered—

—but only for a moment.

It roared, a sound that didn’t belong in any world, and unleashed a brutal swipe that caught Manion mid-air.

He was sent crashing through what remained of the arena, skidding across broken hexes.

Silence fell for a split second.

Manion rose slowly.

His armor was cracked.

His breathing heavier.

But his eyes—still sharp.

Still focused.

The Sphinx prowled closer, each step deliberate. It wasn’t rushing anymore.

It was enjoying this.

Manion stood his ground.

If this was no longer a battle of rules…

Then it would be a battle of will.

The Sphinx leapt.

Manion didn’t dodge.

He charged.

They collided mid-air.

Wings clashed. Claws locked. The impact split the ground beneath them as both creatures fought for dominance in raw, unfiltered combat.

The Sphinx bit down—

Manion twisted, forcing its jaws aside and driving his talons into its side. Dark energy burst from the wound, but instead of weakening, the Sphinx grew more violent.

It slammed Manion downward.

Hard.

The ground shattered completely.

Dust filled the air.

For a moment… nothing moved.

Then—

A golden glow pierced the darkness.

Manion rose from the rubble, wings spreading wide despite the damage. He let out a sharp cry—no longer just a participant in a game, but a warrior adapting to a new reality.

The Sphinx answered with a roar.

They charged one final time.

No arena.

No rules.

Just two forces colliding—one born of order, the other of chaos.

Light and darkness met in a blinding explosion that tore through the broken battlefield and echoed into both worlds.

And for the first time…

The Sphinx hesitated.

Not in fear.

But in recognition.

This was no longer prey.

This was a fight.
