Scenes from Michigan Central Station, now under renovation following its purchase by the Ford Motor Company. The towering structure, vacant for decades, has been emblematic of the Motor City’s postindustrial decline. Now its unlikely resurrection is well underway, with plans for the cavernous main floor to be open to the public. Shops and eateries will attract people to the historic building and the Corktown neighborhood around it.
Ford gave access to a journalist and photographer from the Detroit Free Press for a hardhat tour of the worksite; the photos above are some of the shots taken by Free Press photographer Mandi Wright. The bottom photo, btw, shows the framework of the station’s original carriage house.
