An ode to electronic music itself, whose lyrics harp on the simple theme of how music like this, itself, is made. It’s only natural that I find this totally irresistible. Manuel “Man” Parrish is a fascinating figure in music history, and was absolutely pivotal to the development of New York City’s dance music scene through the peak of disco and the dawn of electro. Despite the prominent usage of the phrase “hip hop” throughout his early 80s output, there’s not much here that modern listeners would really identify as “hip hop” in this vocoder-driven thumper--it goes to show the extent of cross-talk between hip hop and electronica at this time, something many enthusiasts (of either genre) might not realize. Another perhaps surprising tidbit about Parrish is that he was also closely involved with the avant-garde icon, Klaus Nomi. Listen for some backing vocals in Nomi’s unmistakable operatic counter-tenor, which give this track that extra bit of intrigue.
