It’s been well over a month since the premier of FNaF2 and the most vivid memory I have from my first watching experience was witnessing the reveal of Michael’s character and telling my homegirl “He is SO getting shipped with Mike.” What I didn’t expect, was for this ship, that was introduced so suddenly and so late in the franchise would end up being one of - if not the most popular in the fandom.
Don’t get me wrong, while I do love me some complex and perhaps toxic yaoi, I honestly feel like Miketosis became so popular out of the fandom’s primal need to have an MLM ship to obsess over. Sure, why the hell not. Up until this point, one of the most loved ships in FNaF was Jeremike, which is a ship between two concepts of characters, just because the fans needed their yaoi.
Then, why not bring Jeremike into the FNaF movie fandom? Jeremiah seems to be a rendition of Jeremy Fitzgerald from the game, and he even had a pretty fun introduction to Michael in the movie’s finale.
Nope! Fujos can’t handle anything that isn’t between two conventionally attractive white men. Call me that one friend that’s too woke, but fans are so obsessed with Miketosis because it’s safe. It has potential to be angsty as well as hot, of course they would immediately become a fan-favourite in a month or so in a franchise that has existed for more than a decade.
They can’t obsess over Schmelly, because literally what fandom chooses the canon straight ship, not Jeremike because it doesn’t fit their standards and goes beyond their tolerance for queerness, not Willry, because it’s too toxic, not Charnessa because it’s not male centred (absolutely criminal 😳), so they settle for Miketosis.
To be clear, I’m not against the idea of Miketosis. It’s a fun concept and it has revived shipping culture and content in the FNaF fandom! Nor am I against it narratively, their characters compliment each other dynamically as opposites and lots of tropes could fit their relationship.
What I’m NOT a fan of, is what Miketosis represents. You could say that “what are you even talking abt it’s not that deep” but the fact is, that Miketosis represents everything that’s still wrong with fandom culture, from being male-centred to blatant racism and homophobia.
Anyway, Miketosis has insane potential. So does any other FNaF ship. It may be the ship dominating fandom spaces rn, but I think the reason for it is a bit disappointing,,, Make sure to give me your opinion in the comments, discourse is very much wanted!!!
