When I told one of my friends - a girl with hair way longer than mine will ever be - that I was planning on cutting my hair, she told me she couldn’t believe I would do that because for her, her hair was part of who she was, part of her personality and she’d never be able to cut it off without feeling absolutely terrible.

I did it then and even though I was happy with my decision to cut my hair, I simply let it grow back again and by the time I was in uni my hair was as long as it had been before the chop; ready to be donated again.
But okay, I have to be honest.
While the first time around I cut my hair purely for the purpose of donation, this time I did it because I had fallen in love with a short hairstyle. Specifically that of Noora in the Norwegian webseries ‘Skam’ (which is amazing btw).
Having decided I wanted this fresh new ‘do I looked into donating my hair once again. Because I had used washable dyes on my hair previously - my hair is very blonde and therefore easily took most washable dyes - I looked through the organisations website to check of this would be a problem. Unfortunately, their website explicitly stated that dyes - no matter if they were permanent or washable - were a problem.
Slightly defeated I spoke to my friends about this and one of them suggested that instead of donating, I could sell my hair. What an amazing idea. I could get the hairstyle I so badly wanted and at the same time make some money with what I cut off. Since I hadn’t been aware that selling and buying hair was a business at all, I was surprised to find it a business big enough to support several websites.
Although I did not end up selling my hair in the end, I wanted to add this part because I want to stress how important it is to be careful when selling your hair. I received several offers on my hair and most of them appeared to be scams, asking me to forward money through paypal for shipping costs etcetera. Selling your hair is a great thing, I for one thought it was amazing, but please be careful who you sell to and in what way.
Because selling my hair did not go as smoothly, and because I loved the idea of donating, I decided to look a bit more into my possibilities for donation. After emailing the organisation directly I learned that the only real problem in the dyes is the hydrogen peroxide that is present in most forms of dye. All the products I had used were washable colours from Bleach London (you can also buy their products outside of the UK here), which are 100% hair friendly and do not use any hydrogen peroxide. Deciding that I was therefore safe to donate I went to the hairdresser.
As present as the hesitation that I’d felt the first time I cut off my hair was back then, so absent it was the second time.
