If you want to take novelty to the next level, come visit the MakerBot store!
What is a MakerBot you ask?
In short, MakerBot is a 3-d printer.
What's a 3-d printer?Â
You can take a 2 dimensional image, like the White House (or any other template from the MakerBot design library) and MakerBot can build a 3 dimensional plastic replica of that White House.
The store is the first of its' kind, showcasing MakerBots that are for sale (specifically the Replicator 2 around $2,500) and the process by which the machines are creating the plastic objects. It's like FAO Schwartz 10.0, entertaining for a glance and the opportunity to play around with some of the objects.
In addition to the machines themselves, the store sells the MakerBot output, small plastic toys that are kind of expensive.
A really cool draw is the store's 3D Photo booth that allows visitors to buy 3D-printed models of their own faces. It's the ultimate in narcissistic gift giving/receiving since custom American Girl Dolls.
The photo-taking process, which takes roughly five minutes, creates the sort of models shown in the picture above. Once you take your photo they place their orders with MakerBot and receive their plastic head replicas in 4-6 weeks.
The big picture here, is that MakerBot empowers consumers to design and create the products they want, for themselves. It's complete consumer autonomy. FUBU.
