a random post on reddit made me write this
âI think weâre all set, Dr. Cooper,â said a man dressed in all black. His face was hidden behind a white mask, and his voice was altered so Sheldon couldnât recognize it.
Sheldon let out a long sigh, a mix of relief and exhaustion. It had been six difficult months since he was forced to work on the calculations for a time-travel capsule. He hadnât agreed willingly, this secret group pressured him, making him sign a contract. He wasnât allowed to tell anyone, and if the project was ever discovered, they threatened the lives of his familyâAmy and their two children.
Keeping the secret had been painful. Many times Amy noticed something was off, and every time she confronted him, he denied it. Those denials often turned into arguments, leaving him guilty and heartbroken. He hated seeing her hurt and confused knowing he cannot do something about it.
âAs a reward for your work, Dr. Cooper,â the masked man continued, âbefore we erase all of your memories that is related with this project, we will let you be the first to test the capsule. So, tell usâwhat point in time in any universe do you want to visit?â
For as long as Sheldon could remember, time travel had been his dream. As a child, he had lists of places and moments in history he wanted to seeâEinsteinâs discoveries, Newtonâs apple tree, even the very start of the universe. But standing here now, only one person filled his thoughts: his wife, Amy.
He wanted to make things right with her. To fix the stress, the doubt, and the fights he had caused by keeping this secret.
He paused to think. Should he go back to their first meeting? Their first date? Their first kiss? The memories rushed through his mind. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized he didnât want to change any of those moments. They were already perfect just the way they happened.
Every laugh, every argument, every small memory he shared with Amy was priceless. Changing even one would mean losing something special.
There was one thing Amy once told Sheldon that he could never get out of his mind: her high school prom.
âDo you think if we met at a prom when we were both sixteen, you would ask me for a dance? Letâs say my mom allowed me to go with a real prom date, I wore a classic dress, put in contact lenses instead of my glasses, and just looked like a normal teenager. And imagine you werenât so socially awkward, and you were open to those kinds of things like a normal teenager too. What do you think wouldâve happened?â
Those were Amyâs exact words, asked casually on a random day. Sheldon never gave her a clear answer, but nowâmaybe this was his chance. If he chose that time, in that universe, he could finally know what might have happened.
So he told the masked man that this was the exact moment and place he wanted to go.
They blindfolded Sheldon, carefully guided him into the capsule, and laid him down. A few seconds passed, and when he opened his eyes, everything was different.
He was standing in a high school gymnasium transformed into a prom hall. The ceiling was lined with strings of twinkling fairy lights, casting a soft glow over the room. A glittery banner hung above the stage: âJunior-Senior Prom.â Balloons in gold and white floated in bunches at the corners. The floor was crowded with teenagers in tuxedos and dresses, some laughing loudly, others swaying shyly to the music. A pop song from the late 90s boomed through the speakers, the bass rattling the floor. The air smelled faintly of perfume, hairspray, and the sweet punch being served at the refreshment table.
And then, from across the room, Sheldon saw her.
Young Amy. She looked very different from the Amy he knew in the present, at least in appearanceâbut in his heart, he knew immediately it was her.
She wore a simple printed white sleeveless dress that touched just above her knees. Her long light brown hair flowed freely over her shoulders, and she wasnât wearing glasses. There was a shy glow about her, but to Sheldon, she looked absolutely beautifulâlike no one else in the room mattered.
He didnât know how much time he had in this timeline, but he knew one thingâhe was here for a reason. His only goal was to ask Amy to dance. To give her the prom date she once dreamed of, and to finally answer the question she had asked him in their own world.
For reasons he couldnât explain, his nerves shot up as he walked toward her. Amy was sitting in one of the chairs along the wall, chatting with a couple of girls he didnât recognize. When he stopped in front of her, she slowly turned her head. Their eyes met, and in that single moment, Sheldon felt as though he was falling in love with her all over again.
Just then, the DJâs voice boomed over the speakers, and the atmosphere of the prom shifted. The opening notes of âIt Might Be Youâ by Stephen Bishop filled the room. The lively chatter turned into soft whispers as couples began pulling each other onto the center of the dance floor for a slow dance.
âHi,â Sheldon Cooper said nervously, clearing his throat. âI donât know if you know me, but Iâm Sheldon. Would you⊠mind having a dance with me?â He extended his trembling hand toward her, waiting, almost bracing himself for rejection.
But instead, Amy giggled. That sound wasnât something Sheldon expectedânot in the slightest. Of all the possible reactions he imagined, laughter had never been on the list.
âYouâre so silly, Sheldon,â Amy said between giggles. âWhy would I refuse to dance with my boyfriend?â
Before he could even react, she slipped her hand into his and pulled him toward the dance floor.
Sheldonâs mind stumbled over her words. Boyfriend? He barely noticed his own body responding automaticallyâher hands rested gently on his shoulders, while his hands, almost by instinct, settled carefully at her waist.
âWhat did you say? Iâm your⊠what?â Sheldon asked, his voice low and unsure, as if the sentence hadnât fully processed in his brain.
Amy smiled, her eyes sparkling with a happiness that seemed to light up the whole gym. âDid you forget? A week ago, Stuart asked me to be his date for this prom. And right away, you showed up out of nowhere and said, âExcuse me, Fowler. The thought of you dancing in a darkened prom room with a character like Stuart is repellent. No offense, Stuart.ââ She laughed softly at the memory. âThen somehow that conversation ended with you asking me to be your girlfriend.â
Her smile grew wider, clearly happy as she remembered it.
Sheldon blinked, speechless. But deep inside, something warm and certain settled in his chest. He whispered almost to himself, âI guess in every timeline of the universe, I really canât stand the image of you with another man.â
Amy stopped mid-dance, her smile widening. She grabbed his hands suddenly and tugged him toward the other side of the room. âHey, look! Thereâs a photo booth. I always wanted to take a picture in it with someone.â
The booth was crowded, a line of students eagerly waiting their turn. Sheldon turned to Amy, watching her face as her excitement bubbled over. She looked so alive, so carefree, so happy in that moment.
He couldnât stop himself. His chest tightened, and the words slipped out before he could hold them back. âI love you.â
Despite the music and the noisy crowd around them, Amy clearly heard him.
Amy looked at him with wide eyes. This was the very first time she had ever heard someone say those words to her, and it nearly brought tears to her eyes.
âI love you too,â she whispered, and Sheldon tightened his grip on her hand.
It was their turn to take a picture in the booth. Amy hesitated, unsure how to poseâshould they just stand there, should she link her arm through his? She was nervous, and Sheldon noticed it right away. Wanting to calm her, he stood behind her, wrapped both of his arms gently around her, rested his head against hers, and said softly, âSmile, Amy.â In that moment, he finally understood the answer to his wifeâs questionâno matter the timeline, something would always pull them toward each other.
The flash went offâand in that instant, Sheldon snapped back into reality.
âSheldon⊠Sheldon.â He heard his name being called gently. He opened his eyes, blinking against the sunlight streaming in through the window blinds.
When his vision cleared, he saw Amy standing by the bed, their youngest daughter curled against his side, and their eldest son standing at the foot of the bed.
âAre you okay, Daddy?â his six-year-old daughter asked with concern.
âWhat happened?â Sheldon murmured, slowly pushing himself up to sit.
âYou were dreaming,â Amy said softly, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder and rubbing it. âYou kept making sounds I couldnât understand.â
Sheldon tried to recall the dream, but the details slipped away. All he knew was that he didnât feel uneasy. In fact, he felt the oppositeâhappy and at peace. Looking at his wife and children, he realized this was the perfect place he truly wanted to be.
âIâm fine,â he said, giving them a small smile. âSorry for worrying all of you.â He picked up his daughter and set her on his lap. A moment later, her stomach growled loudly enough for everyone to hear.
âIâm hungry, Daddy,â she said with a pout that made him chuckle.
âThen letâs all have breakfast,â Sheldon said. He set her down, and she immediately ran toward the kitchen with her older brother racing behind her.
Sheldon and Amy walked side by side, their hands intertwined. He leaned over, kissed her cheek, and whispered, âI love you, my wife.â
Amy smiled warmly and answered, âI love you too.â
But no one in the family knew that outside their home, a man dressed in dark clothes, his face hidden behind a mouth mask, sunglasses, and a black cap, stood watching. He spoke quietly into his phone.
âDr. Cooper has been safely returned to his family, sir.â
After ending the call, he reached into his pocket and pulled something outâa photo.
It was Sheldon and Amyâs prom picture.
Shamyâalways and forever.
Please be Sheldon and Amy again⊠just once more. Just one last time, please đ„șđ
