A Keith/Hunk prompt: one or both of them was a military, service, or maintenance android that played a role in some war effort or another. Post-war, all remaining androids are integrated into daily society (with or without wiping their military prowess, ability to assault another, confidential memory files, or whatever else suits the mood). And integrating? Easier said than done, but a little help and support can go a long way. They find each other.
ok this one DEFINITELY got away from me and this is more pre(pre)-relationship than anything LMAO but here! where the garrison was the same paramilitary force with a heavier emphasis on the military bit b4 getting shut down
warning: theres a bit of vomiting at the very start, just the first two lines directly under the line you can jump straight to âSorry about thatâ
Hunk immediately throws up.
Keith can only stare helplessly at the puddle of oil and tarnow pooling on the floor. Hunk wheezes.
âSorry,â he says, queasily, because thatâs apparently athing that robots do now. âUs old maintenance models â weâre supposed to belike, on the ground. Fragile parts, yâknow? Not â shaking.â
He doubles over and holds a finger up. Keith politely stepsback.
When a moment passes and no tar or turbulence isforthcoming, Hunk straightens up, looking a bit worse for wear but smilingnonetheless.
âSorry about that,â Hunk apologises again. He holds out ahand. âUh, so yeah. Iâm Hunk. Youâre Keith, right?â
Keith stares down at the hand. It takes him an inordinatelylong time to realize that heâs supposed to shake it, but by the time he putshis hand in a too-tight grip, itâs already awkward and uncomfortable allaround. Hunk coughs into his free hand, although as far as Keith knows, androids donât typically cough or get sick, maintenance model or not.
âSo, you know Shiro?â Hunk asks, after a pause.
âYes,â Keith says. Heâs realizing that heâs not helping theconversation move along at all, buthe has no idea what heâs supposed to be doing to help it. This is exactly why he never bothered to tryintegrating. âFrom the Garrison.â
Then, more out of curiosity than for the sake of etiquette,he says, âyou know Shiro?â
âOh, yeah,â Hunk says, nodding enthusiastically. Keith canâttear his eyes away from the movement. âI knew him from his Garrison days too,but I only got to know him after I started taking over maintenance for his arm.I knew about you too, but I didnât know you knew Shiro.â
Keith blinks.
âYou knew about me?â
âWell, Lance did,â Hunk amends, sheepishly. Keith watcheshis hand reach up to scratch at his neck. âItâs, uh, hard not to. What with theleaving the Garrison and everything.â
Hunk pauses. He looks at Keithâs face, scanning hisexpression intently, and itâs only through practice and Shiroâs repeatedlectures that Keith stops himself from assuming a defensive stance and whippingout his knife. Whatever heâs looking for, he must have identified it, becausehe continues.
âPlus, Lance wanted to be in the fighter pilot division, butitâs not often theyâll let humans, augmented or not, in.â
Keith nods, gruffly. The conversation dies its inevitabledeath, and Hunk whistles to make up for the quiet, staring out into the desert.
For not the first time, Keith wonders where the hell Shirois and what is he plotting. I want you to meet some people, heâd said. Itâllhelp you integrate better into society, heâd continued. He had naturallyassumed that this meant Shiro would actually be present, but clearly he wasgetting proved all sorts of wrong today. Itâs not like him to be late, and itâsbeen seventeen minutes since the appointed time. He gives him thirteen minutes.Heâs got better things to do, like. Like sharpening knives, or something.
âSo,â Hunk starts, and Keith would have jumped if it werenâtfor the fact that he still hasnât managed to shake off the ever-presentvigilance. âWhat do you do?â
Keith looks blankly at him.
âWell. The Garrisonâs been shut down. Iâm guessing youârenot really, like, blending in with humans and society? And I mean that in thenicest way possible. So what do you do in your spare time? Hobbies? Work?â
Keith stares. His first instinct is to state that itâs noneof his business, but if thereâs one thing heâs learned about socialinteraction, itâs that heâs very rarely going to carry it out. Humanssmall-talk, Shiro said. They do it to be friendly and polite.
Except Keith knows for a factthat the man in front of him is not a human. If it werenât for the factthat as an android, heâs pretty much programmed to recognise other androids onsight, he probably wouldâve been fooled into thinking otherwise. He producesmovements that are entirely unnecessary and undirected but somehow makes themappear natural, appear human. Keithhas seen some androids trying to integrate and blend in, but a lot of them comeoff as insincere even when they carry out all the steps and actions correctly.Like theyâre just carrying out another pre-programmed action. Keith would know âitâs how he often feels when he tries.
âBuilding,â Keith says, almost absently. Hunk lookssurprised that he actually responded. âOr looking. For machines, parts.â
âSo when you say building...?â
âMachines. Iâve got a hoverbike.â
âA hoverbike!â
Hunkâs eyes are wide with what is unmistakeably awe, and thegenuine admiration is making him feel â well, feel. So like all other emotions, Keith does his best to stamp itdown and away.
âWhere are you getting parts for a hoverbike? You buy them?â
âThe desert.â Hunkâs eyes go even wider, this time inconfusion, and Keith backtracks, tries to find where he went wrong. âI live here.Near the original Garrison headquarters. Thereâs a lot of scraps, out in themountain ranges. Sometimes whole machines that are still working.â
He opens his mouth, wants to say more. Then he clamps itshut. Models that were made for the front line donât tend to be oversharers ingeneral, but he doesnât want to talk too much or reveal too much unnecessaryinformation. He finishes, instead, with, âyouâd be surprised whatâs out there.â
âWow,â Hunk says, still awed. Then, âI thought you were afighter model?â
Keith shrugs. The movement feels foreign, awkward andforced, but Hunk says nothing, still peering at him curiously.
âNot a lot of fighting to do out in the desert.â
âStill,â Hunk says, shaking his head. âThatâs super awesome.Seriously.â
Keith doesnât know what to say to that. Thank you, probably.Itâs not that great, maybe. They donât feel right, though. Maybe itâs because heâs still not used to holding conversations withpeople that arenât Shiro.
âSo,â Keith says, tentatively, mirroring the tone Hunk used.Hunk immediately looks up. âWhat do you do? In your spare time?â
Hunk stares at him.
Then he actually beams.
âWell, I still like fixing things here and there and itâsenough to put food on the table,â Hunk says, rapid-fire, and Keith is stillstuck on his wide and genuine grin, âbut, well.â
He leans forward conspiratorially, cupping his hand aroundhis mouth. Despite himself, Keith ends up leaning forward and playing along, following his lead.
âMy favorite thing to do is cook.â
It takes Keith a moment to process the words. Then he leansback, just enough so that he can squint properly at Hunkâs face.
âYou... eat?â
Hunk puts a finger to his mouth and waves his other handvigorously, motioning for him to come closer again. Reluctantly, Keith does so.The entire charade is ridiculous to him, especially since thereâs literally noone there but them, but for somereason is too easy to fall into. Much easier than stiff conversations where hedoesnât know what the other person wants from him.
âOkay, so,â Hunk starts at a whisper, eyes shifting. âSomaintenance androids donât taste, right. But,we can smell. Thatâs mostly for like, smoke or gas leaks or just when somethinggoes wrong and you have to smell it to figure it out. Right, so I can tell youif thereâs carbon monoxide in the air, but food?I learned to tell them apart, but I still didnât know what they were.
âSo Pidge â thatâs a friend of mine, sheâs an AI for thismassive system thing but anyway â tells me, âwhen you smell something youâresupposed to also taste it sort of?â Because for some reason she can tastethings and I canât, but anyway. Shegoes to me and offers to like, install receptors and stuff to make it so I cantaste and like. Yeah, weâve all been decommissioned but youâre not supposed totamper with Garrison property or whatever, so we keep it on the down-low but Isaid hell yeah, why not?
âAnd, Keith.â Hunk punctuates his statement with an armaround Keithâs shoulders, pulling him in close. Keith tenses, but mostly heâswondering why a maintenance model android has such soft skin. Maybe that wasalso a modification? âKeith. Buddy. On the day I first tasted food, I swear Iwas born for the first time.â
Keith makes a sound. He canâthelp it.
It takes him a moment to realizethat the sound heâs making is laughing.
âWow,â he says, and he canât stop. There are no tears gathering in his eyes â androids of his kind arenât made thatway â but heâs sure that if he were human, heâd be sobbing at this point. Ittakes another minute for his laughter to subside and for his words to becomecomprehensible, but Hunk still has him pulled in close, eyes on him. âIâll haveto try some of your cooking, then.â
Keith didnât think Hunkâs smilecould get any wider, but at this point heâs welcome to being proven wrong againand again. âSeriously? You wonâtregret it â like, not to brag, but Iâm pretty damn good at cooking. Lancebasically died and went to heaven on the spot, like, humans have no idea. Wait, wait, you donât havetaste receptors though?â
âGood thing youâve got me here.â
The two look over their shouldersat the newcomer. On the edge of the roof stands a kid, short and messy-haired,and behind them a small ship is landing, voices obscured by the slowing engine.
âPidge?â
Pidge grins smugly.
âWhoa, it really is you! In the flesh! With a body!â
She laughs as Hunk rushes over, spinning her around in his arms. Theyâre so comfortablearound each other. Affectionate, like people. He feels like an outsider, watching in on something he canât understand, but thatâs nothing new. Whatâsnew is something that feels like jealousy, like he wants that sort of affection. Like heâs willing to try for it.
âYeah!â Pidge says, almostbreathless, when Hunk finally settles her down on her feet. âDad thought itâdbe a good idea to get me one. Though Matt wasnât really happy when I cut thehair and pretended to be him at the academy for a while.â
âWhatâs happening? The partyâs alreadystarted?â a voice pipes up from behind Pidge. A tall man comes into view, andhe narrows his eyes as he moves past Pidge. âWait. Mullet?â
Everyone turns to look at Keith.Keithâs hand automatically shoots up to touch his hair.
âWhat are you doing here?â
âWhat are you doing here?â Keith shoots back, unable to help himself. The guyâstone was just incredulous and outright hostileâ how else was he supposed to react? His fingers even twitch for his knifestrapped to his belt â he doesnât take it. If heâs right about this assholeâsidentity, then heâs a human, and augmented or not, he canât just fight a humanapropos of nothing.
âWhoa, Lance,â Hunk butts in,waving his hands in front of Keith. âHeâs friends with Shiro! He got invitedhere, same as us.â
âYou know Shiro?â Lance says, still squinting suspiciously, but his voice is no longer as hostile. It doesnâtmake Keith like him any more than before.
âWhere is Shiro?â Pidge cuts in, pushing up her glasses and surveying thearea. Keith checks the time on his internal clock and finds that itâs beenforty minutes since Shiro was supposed to show up. Just how long had they beentalking, and how did he not notice? âHewas supposed to be here first.â
âMaybe this is a trap,â Lancesuggests. âHeâs gonna lock us in here until we can form one giant robotsuperweapon.â
Hunk and Pidge look exasperatedlyat him. Keith takes it as a safe sign that Lance was being (mostly) facetious.
Still, as much as he hates toadmit it, heâs had his own fair share of doubts about the entire situation. Hetrusts Shiro, he really does â but thereâs too much about his behavior thatdoesnât make sense. Keith isnât exactly a fugitive anymore â still, itâs notunreasonable to have chosen the former Garrison as a meetup spot, especiallysince most of the people present are non-human. Thereâs a lot Shiro knows thathe hasnât told anyone, not even him. Awhole yearâs worth of experience heâs never shared. Keith would like to thinkthat itâs just his suspiciousness and paranoia talking, but whatever happenedto Shiro in that time had to be dangerous. Itâs wishful thinking that maybeShiro brought them here to tell themsomething, something important, but what else could it be?
âIs this,â Keith starts, slowly. The possibility that is dawning on him is far from the most dangerous, but itâsalso the most betraying. âIs this an androids anonymous?â
Hunk and Lance stare at him.Pidge is howling with laughter.
âIâm a cyborg, remember,â Shiroâsvoice calls out, amused. He emerges from the other side of the roof, Keithnotes â meaning itâs more likely that Shiro has been here the whole time andwas waiting for his dramatic entrance. He doesnât comment, though. âAnd Ipromise I would never do that to you, Keith. Iâve been doing some thinking, andthereâs something I think you should all know.â
He holds Keithâs stare, then nods.
âItâs about a virus called Galraand something called Voltron.â
Had a dream that Kazu was fighting demons in a killer pair of wine red pumps and like...high-waisted mom jeans. I think he was bringing the beatdown because said demons were harassing his lady friends. He looked fantastic, tbh.
What. an. image. Thank you so much for gracing me with this ask. My night has been kinda crappy so seeing this in my inbox when I got home was justâŚout of this world great.
I really need to see this image now. I feel like heâd probably be able to sprint and jump with these heels too and itâd be amazing. He might be as graceful but heâd get around.
Please do tell me if you have any more amazing Kazuma related dreams because this was GOLD.Â
I had a thought and figured you were the best person to send it to: Kazu with an Alolan Vulpix that he spoils like a second child (the first being, ofc, Eikichi). When his Vulpix evolves into Ninetails he treats 'em like gorgeous royalty one moment and a rambunctious goblin the next - in-depth grooming bonding time one moment, wrestling and chasing each other around the neighborhood the next. Maybe he received the Vulpix from Yukina. Maybe the gang makes jokes about said fox at Kurama's expense
Anyway, as much as Kazu loves cats I could see him with some elegant Pokemon (or hell, a Pokemon that reminds him of each of his friends) and Iâm 100% here for any and all discussions on a YYH Pokemon AU. Heâd be a great Pokemon owner.
Thank you for sending this to me! T_T I appreciated seeing this in my inbox.
I do love pokemon, donât get me wrong but I am so behind on the newer ones! That said, I am familiar with Alolan forms, to a point, and I do like this idea about the gang making jokes at Kuramaâs expense coz you KNOW it would happen.
I definitely can see him being as attentive to his pokemon as he does his cats. They are treasured to him, I think. And I definitely think heâd like elegant pokemon AND pokemon that reminds him of his friends. And the idea he would love the Vulpix coz Yukina gave it to him? *cries*
I canât really think of which pokemon would remind him of his friends -- that is where my knowledge finds short.
Anyone want to pitch on the pokemon discussion?
@yyhfanfiction do you or anyone else know who could be more useful about this? XDD!!
Also, I agree with you 100% about a YYH Pokemon AU. Give it ALL TO ME. I feel like Kazuma would definitely embody the pokemon theme song XD. Though wearing a hat like Ashâs is a stretch lmao.
(My inbox is still open if you want to send me anything: Kuwabara appreciation, meta, headcanons, discussions, requests for graphics, gifs, or even fics!)
