Thank you to @thescrapwitch @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras and @nycterisg for the tags for a snippet and/or the last 3 lines (sentences?) I wrote. You get five, because my Nerdanel longer-fic has finally decided to come back up for air. Huzzah! Or ouch, seeing what the snippet is about:
They have been warned not to wander, but there is joy in discovery, in pushing just a little farther. And their whole lives have been a Journey, after all – seeking the strange and wonderful, moving with the blind trust that comes of curiosity. Chasing beauty into the looming dark. Nerdanel does not see the beasts that claim her mother. Mahtan shields her, pressing her close against his thundering, breaking heart.

Sometimes I think about Mahtan and how he was like one of - what, two? - Elves who canonically had a beard. And even then, he didn't meet Cirdan for thousands of years. I wonder if he ever felt ugly and ostracized?
I just think about poor young Mahtan noticing the dreaded growth of facial hair and feeling horrified, wondering if he was cursed or something. Poor young Mahtan breaking down about how he'd never attract a woman with an appearance like this. But then his delight and disbelief when one came along who was like, "Wait, I'm kinda into this??"
And maybe, later down the road, Dad Mahtan comforting a distraught young Nerdanel. "Shh, it's okay. They called me ugly too."
