Royal Caribbean wants to develop a water park that will destroy 80 hectares of jungle, mangroves and beach in Mahahual, affecting the home of 300 animal species, 45 of which are endangered, and will destroy the second largest coral reef in the world

This project will bring no benefit to the area nor will it be accessible to Mexicans themselves. Our politicians are willing to destroy any natural area in exchange for a few foreign money because they will never suffer the consequences of these actions

Royal Caribbean busca desarrollar en Mahahual, Quintana Roo, uno de los complejos turísticos para cruceros más grandes del Caribe llamado “Perfect Day”, un mega parque acuático que promete atraer miles de visitantes internacionales y se espera entre en operaciones hacia 2027. Sin embargo, organizaciones ambientalistas advierten que el desarrollo podría general impactos irreversibles en una de las zonas ecológicas más sensibles del Caribe mexicano. El proyecto, de acuerdo con información de El País y Greenpeace, tendrá una inversión estimada en 1,000 millones de dólares y pretende recibir hasta 21,000 visitantes al día en una localidad donde viven alrededor de 2,600 habitantes Debido su cercanía con el Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano, considerado el segundo arrecife de coral más grande del mundo organizaciones como Greenpeace México y Defendiendo el Derecho a un Medio Ambiente Sano (DMAS) sostienen que la construcción podría afectar manglares, dunas costeras, acuíferos y especies marinas de la región.

La titular de la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat), Alicia Bárcena, anunció que el gobierno no otorgará los permisos necesarios para el proyecto turístico.

Celebramos, pero también seguimos atentos. El No de SEMARNAT es importante, pero aun falta que se formalice por escrito. Y que Royal Caribbean confirme su desistimiento. Mahahual merece que esto quede protegido legalmente.

Judges endorse destruction of jungle in Mahahual in favor of the construction of Royal Caribbean water park.

The injunction against Royal Caribbean's "Perfect Day Mexico" resort was dismissed by the First Collegiate Court of the Twenty-Seventh Circuit. Environmental organizations warn that this decision favors the commercial interests of Royal Caribbean and leaves the ecosystems of Mahahual, a coastal city in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, vulnerable. Mahahual is located next to the world's second-largest coral reef.

The project was announced in October 2024 by the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama. However, since its announcement, various organizations and groups have expressed concern about the potential environmental and social impacts of the development. They point to risks to local ecosystems, as well as to the livelihoods of the area's inhabitants.

Royal Caribbean, a multinational tourism company, wants to undertake an ecocidal project in Mexico. They want to build a 90-hectare water park in Mahahual, a protected mangrove area.

This negatively impacts the ecosystem, its animals, plants and resources (specially water). Also, the local Mayan people get displaced, their culture and lifestyle ruined. Only the company (and our governors) see the financial benefits at the expense of our human, cultural and natural patrimony.
