Help. I'm writing an urban fantasy novel with magic, but I want magic and the regular world to coexist together. I have no idea how to do that without my in universe society collapsing. It needs some kind of laws or rules but I've hit a standstill. Any ideas?
I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking.
You’re saying you want them to coexist. Is this Harry Potter coexisting, or coexisting where they actively interact and know about each other?
In either case, I don’t know why the in-universe society (whatever society you’re talking about) would collapse.
If they’re the latter case where they actively interact and know about each other, think about what would make the people with magic not take over everything. Who has power in the society and why? Think also about whether inter-breeding would exist, and if not, why not? Do half-magic children have magic? How are they viewed in society? How closed do you want the magic society to be? Do they share information about their magic to non-magic people? Are people with magic immediately identifiable as having magic? How? Is it concealable?
Without more details about your story, I can’t really provide you with a lot because I don’t know what you’re thinking of doing. But in any case, think about what effect magic would have on the world, technological development, etc, whether or not non-magic people know about it.
