Magic-user Chilchuck - Early on, he happens to encounter code-breaking magic, which is lock-picking taken to its logical extreme. Skeptical but intrigued, he seeks out mana practice (training that increases mana capacities, within reason) then de facto founds a new magic style that minimizes mana and maximizes impact. Why kill with an explosion when a thousandth of the mana can interrupt a cardiac electrical circuit, causing immediate death? Hypothetically, of course.

Half-magic Pixies - Chilchuck develops his own formula for pixies that goes beyond basic communication functions while using less mana. It's still intensive, so he takes good care of pixies and beats best practices for care into any trainees. Half-magic pixies (or half-pixies) are smaller and weaker but more autonomous, as his mana-preserving measure implants a pseudo-consciousness that encourages it to self-perpetuate.

Chilchuck's unique mini-pixies trigger an investigation by the western elves, which is only the beginning of their interference in his founding of half-magic.

At the start of his magic career, Chilchuck attempted to study healing but found it way too demanding on mana, leading to this exchange during his brief stay at university. However...

Magic that's too "big" (intensive healing and resurrection included) will get him in trouble with the western elves again, so his wife is never pleased to hear about him dabbling in risky business.
