Ideally, it would be great if you already started preparing for christmas casual positions a couple weeks ago by writing your resume and cover letter etc, but it’s never too late to start and if you already have those things written, then now would be a very good time to start applying!

There are some stores that have their information on their websites and social media. You can also email the careers counsellors who can give you some information and advice. The careers counsellors are Ms Serpless ([email protected]) and Ms Puszka ([email protected]).

Most of the time, applying for these positions is as simple as emailing your resume to the place you want to apply, but this may differ for different jobs. Check their websites for more information!

FAM member 1: Yes definitely! It’s helped me just experience what it’s like in a work environment. As I work in customer service, I’m constantly on the phone with customers and I’ve had to learn how to handle difficult customers and because of that it’s definitely helped me to be more confident. It’s also nice not having to always ask my parents for money as well as just being able to treat myself more often. I definitely found it difficult at times to manage my homework but I started out in year 10 so over the years I found what works for me and to not take on more than I can manage.

I was FAM member 2 and I got the job because my sister had worked there and they were looking for more workers so my sister just recommended me. My sister initially got the job there as they advertised the job through the school. Some companies will do this so keep an eye on your inbox because the career counsellors will email us about any job opportunities. Alternatively you can visit the career counsellors if you’d like help finding a job.

For running, if you’ve never been running regularly you can ease yourself into it by running 1-2 km a couple of times a week. From there you can build up to 3-5 km. If you don’t have a lot of time (or don’t want to run for a long time)  you can look into high intensity interval training (HIIT) which is basically training at high intensity intervals with low intensity intervals for ‘recovery’ in between. There are many different workouts you can follow but sometimes what I’ll do is jog for a minute then sprint for 10 seconds and repeat it 10 times. If you look online you can find other variations to suit you. I would also highly recommend downloading the Nike Run Club app so that you can track your runs and see details such as your average pace. Seeing your progress or joining the Nike challenges are also really good at motivating yourself to go for a run.

FAM Member 1: I work at macrob campus no.5 (after melbuni, monash and state) : betty’s burgers. I have quite a lot of frees, 12 to be exact, so I try to do work in at least half of them. I work 2 weekdays a week and I’ll usually go straight there after school, maybe do some homework there. For the 3 others day, I’ll either stay at school and do work or go home and chill (not do any work).

FAM Member 2: I work in customer service at a call centre on Saturdays from 9am-4pm so I just smash out 7 hours on one day which is nice. I’ve worked there since the end of year 10 (I worked 4-6pm twice a week after school before year 12 though) so I feel like I’ve gotten to know how to manage my time well. It also helps that my workplace is flexible so I’m able to take time off during exam periods which I did last year. For my schedule after school, I normally just go to state everyday because I get way too distracted at home. It depends on how much I have to get done but normally I’ll stay till about 7. Sometimes if I feel really behind I’ll go to Monash library on Sunday but that’s really rare.

We’re sure you’ve heard this before “work smart, not hard” and it is 100% applicable to VCE. Getting 45+ requires the ability to link concepts learnt in a strong manner – it’s not just about recalling rote-learnt information. So the main message is achieving 45+ is not about how many hours you put into a subject, it’s about how well you use the hours you allocate to the subject.

We’re not too sure about your current situation, but if you currently work weekends, do you feel like you’re pressed for time? If not, try and keep on working weekends. Term 1 is a good time to test out your work and study timetable. If you do start feeling pressed, try rescheduling your timetables, lessen the hours you work or stop working weekends. Never feel pressured to work through stressful times, your health (mental and physical) is most important and neglecting it is not worth the moola. Your employer will understand you when you ask for time off, they know you’re a VCE student.

Not at all! When I completed work experience, my manager asked if I would like to work there. So I sent in my resume and I’m still working one and a half years later. When you are completing your work experience, you can take the opportunity to ask if they are hiring. You might even have a better chance than other applicants because your potential employers can see how you work.

There are numerous clubs you can still join at this time of year. Ms Dean sent out an email to the whole school regarding info for 2018 clubs (she sent it on the 26th April), so feel free to check that doc out for clubs that may interest you.

Otherwise, feel free to give sports a go as well. It’s an encouraging environment and Adelaide tryouts are being held right now.

You can also consider doing some volunteering work, it can a one off at events such as Red Cross Appeal (keep an eye out for emails from GIV as they will be able to give you information about all things volunteering!) or you could do some long-term volunteering at your local op-shop.

Committee applications will also open late this year/early next year so don’t hesitate to apply for those as well :)

So nowadays the main process of job application is online where some general questions are asked and you fill it out like you would a form or survey. It might be helpful to call the store to let them know that you want to apply to and ask to speak to a manager about the process. You could even take it a step further and go ask in person (bring your resume along with you because you never know!).

If you’ve already applied, you can even contact the store (via phone, email, in-person, etc.) just to see if they’ve received your application. This shows a lot of initiative and confidence and it definitely leaves a lasting impression.

In terms of receiving a response with regards to your application, the wait often varies quite a bit. Sometimes the case is that they don’t get back to you which means it might be worthwhile to keep looking for other work opportunities. But definitely contact them just to see that they’ve received your application and that you have the best chance of being offered a job.
