205 Cass Avenue was built circa 1860. It's most famous occupant was Capt. George Orr. Orr was the master of the Island Queen, a Great Lakes steamship. During the Civil War, the Island Queen was involved in a skirmish on Lake Erie when a group of Confederate privateers, led by John Yates Beall, captured the steamer near Niagara Falls. Beall had devised a plan to "liberate" Confederate prisoners at Johnson's Island and escape down the river. However, Beall was arrested, convicted as a spy and sentenced to death. President Abraham Lincoln granted a six-day stay of execution, but refused to intervene any further. Beall was hanged on February 24, 1965. John Wilkes Booth, a friend of Beall, infuriated by Lincoln's refusal to save his life, assassinated President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC on April 14, 1965. Captain Orr, who resigned as captain of the Island Queen, due to ailing health, was a witness at the trial of John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirators. #MetroDetroit #MountClemens #MacombCounty #Italianate #VictorianArchitecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Mount Clemens, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGoWeesDrMJ/?igshid=98c9hxsf8voh
