Like T cells, B cells are a type of blood cell that belong to a group of white blood cells (WBCs) called lymphocytes, which help the body fight infection. When B cells encounter an antigen (infection or a foreign body), they become activated and produce molecules called antibodies that attach to the surface of the infectious agent. These antibodies either kill the infection-causing organism or make it vulnerable to attack by other WBCs. This process guards the body against infection.
