Since season 1, Maciej has hated being a commoner. He feels deeply resentful about obeying and suffering humiliations simply for being born into the wrong family. However, he can do nothing to change his situation, which generates a massive frustration that he channels into hatred toward those who put him in that position: the nobles. What he didn’t expect was that he would fall in love with one. Within their relationship, he is deeply insecure about belonging to a lower social class. This, combined with his prejudices against the nobility, causes a severe insecurity that explodes when Marcin arrives and becomes friends with Aniela. This makes Maciej believe that Aniela will abandon him at any moment. Maciej panics and decides he wants to run away with Aniela before it’s too late, but to do that, he needs money he doesn't have.

He could ask Aniela for it, but he refuses. Not out of pride, but because doing so would expose the social divide in their relationship, which he loathes. Asking for money isn't just asking for a favor; it means admitting he is a commoner and that, even in love, he will never achieve the equality he so desperately craves. No, he would rather work twice as hard than rely on a noble again. So, he decides to get into the illegal salt trade, completely unaware of how dangerous it actually is. It reaches a point where his life is threatened to force a delivery; day after day he drifts further from Aniela, and day after day she grows closer to Marcin. To put it bluntly: he is a complete mess. He can't handle the pressure and decides to confess everything to Aniela, but right then, Jan Paweł appoints her to oversee the salt security. This serves as another reminder that they are not on the same level: he is a commoner and she is a noble; he is a criminal and she is a guardian (so to speak). Maciej is literally destined to be oppressed by the woman he loves. When Aniela asks him what’s wrong, he stays silent because he is terrified. Eventually, the salt business gets complicated, he is forced to steal from the granary, and for reasons that don't matter right now, he gets caught.

The moment the couple is finally left alone, Maciej confesses that he wanted to flee with her and that he was jealous. When she calls him out for acting tough and refusing to ask for help, he replies: "I seek a balance of power; because without it there is no love, only submission." And that is his purpose. The pursuit of the equality that was denied to him is what drives every single one of his actions. This moment is crucial because it’s the first time he actually admits it. This, combined with the atmospheric setting and the brilliant performance of both actors, makes this scene the absolute highlight of the season.

Moving forward in time, Aniela gets him out of prison. Obviously, Maciej cannot return to the village because he would be arrested again. His only option is to flee, and he assumes Aniela will join him, but she has changed and must return to Adamczycha. Then comes a farewell scene that perfectly showcases Maciej’s entire character growth. In the early episodes, his motto was "Never dream of anything, never expect anything." He was completely resigned to his life as a commoner. But when he meets Aniela and realizes that maybe it is worth the risk, he decides to use his built-up resentment to improve himself and build a better life (even if it has to be without Aniela).

Aniela hates being a noble, specifically a noble woman. This is mainly because she is forced to marry someone she probably won't love. Furthermore, she is a restless soul: she loves culture and science, and she longs to travel to other places to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. However, her duties in the village force her to stay trapped there. This breeds a resentment that blinds her, locking her inside a bubble where she is completely unable to see other people's struggles. In the second season, she meets Marcin (someone she can finally discuss topics with that she previously couldn't share with anyone) and she is appointed as the village manager. This satisfies Aniela’s ambitions; she implements improvements in the village, feeling useful and accomplished.

Then comes the granary scene. The revelation that Maciej is the salt smuggler hits her like a bucket of cold water, and when Maciej explains the reasoning behind his actions, it becomes the final straw. This dialogue acts like the needle that pops her bubble. Being unable to see that Maciej was completely falling apart triggers a sort of crisis in her, and we see her do something she has never done before: resign herself to fate. She accepts the idea that Maciej is going to be hanged and does nothing to stop it. When she discovers he is still alive in the Kraków prison, she is filled with hope and rushes to save him. Once she realizes she won't be able to get him out, she does something else entirely new: she doesn't blame the world, she blames herself. In those moments of despair, she discovers Rozalia's letters to Zofia. This is another harsh reality check; she realizes everything she thought about her mother was wrong. She believed her mother was just a privileged woman demanding sacrifices from others that she herself never made, when the truth was that her mother had sacrificed absolutely everything. Aniela saves Maciej but refuses to run away with him. She chooses to return to Adamczycha and marry a tycoon because it is her duty, even though Zofia herself later urges her to go after Maciej.
