                   CANON DEVIATIONS & RELEVANT NOTES

there is one huge and important deviation from canon - - didyme didn’t die. the circumstances of her failed assassination attempt will be detailed below , but it’s important to note that didyme would not be easily recognizable for most vampires apart from the original volturi members ( all of whom she has carefully avoided for centuries ). unless a vampire has the ability to discover who she is, or access to the memories of any of those who actually knew didyme as didyme - - she’s just another vampire. everyone believes didyme has died. she has only recently revealed herself to carlisle cullen, realizing that the volturi taking a vested interest in vampire activity leaves her vulnerable. 

didyme has adopted an entirely new identity and a new life as cora diamandis. she actively attempts to pass as a human to further obscure herself from the volturi. her human nuances have been extremely well practiced over hundreds and hundreds of years. 

didyme doesn’t necessarily have the intention to break up the volturi ! how she chooses to handle the revelations ( i.e. whether she tells marcus what really went down ) will all come from development & consultation with everyone ! she’s no one’s enemy sldkjfls

                                           BACKGROUND

HER HUMAN LIFE WAS BRIEF , and is so distant to her that it exists only in fleeting glimpses. of sunlight on the sea , warm mediterranean breezes , and an undeniable ability to bring joy into the lives of those she encountered. she had a brother she loved terribly , a brother who changed drastically . soon enough , he changed her too. she believed that her transformation was an act of love - and perhaps it was, but it was also an act of power . aro wanted to grow his influence , and thought his sister could develop gifts that would complement his own. 

didyme’s abilities were not of the conquering type . in her rebirth , just in her life , she was capable of bringing happiness - bringing peace to those she encountered. it was  a start , and aro put her to work , keeping his growing army placated & happy . 

her ‘aura of happiness’ attracted many . she was fawned over & adored , but she never reciprocated . her abilities extended to others only - - she could not induce happiness upon herself. the love she was given felt one - sided ; false. until marcus. marcus made didyme feel the happiness she imparted on others . he was her heart’s mate , and the appeal of the growing volturi , of serving under her brother’s thumb , felt like a hinderance to a life lived in love . didyme requested aro’s permission to depart with marcus, and to her joy , she received it. or so she thought . 

under the guise of  preparing for her departure , didyme was escorted ( alone ) by a lower ranking volturi guard to obtain necessary materials . the newborn was under firm instructions to kill didyme, but  due to her ability to calm and reassure him ( to make her presence a welcome thing ) he faltered . 

didyme was able to unearth the truth of the situation ( or , a variation of the truth ) from the boy : aro & marcus felt that didyme was a hinderance to their conquest. they could not succeed if she survived, and thus it was essential that she be killed. didyme’s heart shattered. empowered by her sheer emotion, didyme was able to use her power to make the guard feel satisfied - accomplished - happy . she had altered his memory , allowing him to believe he had in fact killed her ( and thus hopefully obscuring her survival from aro )

filled with disbelief , didyme fled without a word -  she could not endanger herself by confronting her brother , and she could not face marcus if he had in fact ordered her death. 

in her isolation , didyme wished for death . in moments of despair she thought of returning to her brother and allowing him to exact his order fully . she could not bear her sorrow . but to die would mean that aro had succeeded , that her life would have been one in thousands of casualties . she had to live in spite. 

and so , didyme recreated herself . through hundreds of years , who she was became a distant memory ( though her sorrow and longing never faded ). she lived a nomadic lifestyle , settling in one location as long as she was allowed - attempting to fit in with human society until she was forced to move on. she fed only on the cruel and murderous . she developed an extreme self control, and dedicated her existence to doing good - helping in whatever ways she could. she pursued knowledge avidly. she consorted with kings, stopped wars with her power. 

she made a few friends under her new identity : cora . she did the best that she could , and still she ached . she gave the world the happiness she could not give herself. 

cora cycled through professions , developed passions, and did whatever she could to quell her loneliness and occupy her time. 

most recently, she settled in seattle as an antiquities curator for the seattle museum of art, working evenings as well as a child psychologist, helping them through their troubles in whatever limited ways she good. didyme might have lost her life & her love , but she kept her goodness.  

didyme caught wind of the altercation that had arisen between the cullens & a nomadic group over a human girl. for the first time , didyme saw the possibility of an alliance  - of a resurgence from the shadows. surely the volturi would be interested in this coven and their protection of a human. didyme could offer herself as a bargaining chip to protect the cullens , and they could in turn protect her . 

didyme revealed herself to carlisle , asking for whatever help she could receive from him & offering the same . now that the newborn army looms on the horizon , and the volturi lurks at the cullens’ doorstep, it is time for didyme to face aro. the time for hiding has ended.

i don’t really know what to say beyond the fact that she is baby. she’s soft and gentle and kind and has deserved nothing that’s come her way, but she’s absolutely capable of handling herself. 

she doesn’t trust very easily , but is very willing to help others.

CARMEN WAS BORN the eldest daughter of five children to a fisherman and his wife. from what she can remember of her youth , she had a happy childhood with parents that loved her very much. carmen was known widely in her village for her beauty, extraordinary kindness, lovely singing voice,  and temperament , making her a desirable spouse to many eligible bachelors within the village. 

while her family muddled by financially , carmen knew it was her duty to elevate the family’s status and offer them a better life. when a well - off merchant proposed his hand in marriage , carmen had little option but to accept. lorenzo was a decent enough husband - he was kind to her and treated her with respect . there wasn’t much more she could ask for - she was content. her live was made truly blissful when she was blessed with twins , her luz de la vida. carmen dedicated her entire life to being their mother.

in the village lurked another presence - a man ( or something like a man ). she caught him gazing at her at night , passing by her home in the early morning, watching from a distance. occasionally, he attempted to catch her eye , to win her favor with flowers and exotic fruits - laces & gems , all under her husband’s nose. carmen had no idea what a singer was , but carmen was his. she was his prey, his plaything, and he wanted, it seemed, to be her mate. 

lorenzo had to leave on a trading voyage , despite carmen’s pleas for him to stay , and she was left alone with the children . it was then in the dead of night that her SUITOR made his move.

it happened in an instant , unbearable pain - - followed by complete darkness. the transformation had occurred so brutally that it took nearly a week for her to awaken. when she did , the burning in her throat was nothing in comparison to the pain in her heart upon realizing that her husband , her bebés  were nowhere to be found. they were GONE. and all that was left was him. 

whispers had begun to circulate in the village of pequeña carmelita, la bruja. lost , terrified , alone , and so very thirsty , carmen had little choice but to follow her tormentor - the only one who could ‘keep her safe.’ 

she traveled with her personal demenio, away from the only place she had ever called home. she learned how to be a vampire under his tutelage, pretending to indulge in his romantic fantasies for her own safety. but carmen was more clever than her captor realized - - clever enough to realize that she was far stronger than he in her newborn state. she exacted her revenge, ending whatever misery he had chosen to call a life. every day she mourned her children, her husband. she traveled europe as a nomad, taking only the lives she deemed worthy of extinguishing.

at some point during her travels, she encountered eleazar. her life , shrouded in darkness , was suddenly flooded with sunlight. in him, she found a kindness she thought she had lost , and a goodness she thought had become extinct from the world. she understood one thing with complete clarity - she would follow him anywhere. 

 carmen returned to volterra with eleazar, but was disconcerted by their operations & concerned for eleazar’s safety. they needed a life that was as compassionate as they were, and soon carmen urged eleazar to leave the volturi. the two were allowed to depart and lived a nomadic lifestyle before stumbling upon the denali clan. their way of life was exactly what they had been looking for, and carmen and eleazar soon found that they had a family. 

TIDBITS

i’m still figuring her out , but carmen is genuinely one of the kindest and most selfless individuals you will ever meet. the needs of those she loves will always supersede her own. 

she is cautious potentially to a fault - she does not readily throw herself or her family in harm’s way, but will fight for those she loves ( the cullens included ) if it is required of her. 

everything that should have hardened carmen to the world only made her kind, and that in itself is her gift.  she’s endured so much but she’s still so soft ? protect her. 

she often acts as a peacemaker within her coven, or the voice of reason when things become contentious.

ABOUT

Born and raised in Forks, Val was always someone she would consider, mundane, or boring. At the age of four, her parents divorced. Her father moved away. Her mother raised her along with her grandparents and relatives who dotted on her every chance they could. Which is all time as they all live close together. Her childhood was nothing special. Val grew up playing with cousins and children in the neighborhood. The only exciting thing in her childhood was her falling off a tree and getting on a cast. She got all her friends and family to sign it like any other kid. At school, she wasn’t a popular kid, but she wasn’t one of the ones that were bullied either. She was the in-between. She blended well in the background. A wallflower of all things.

Her first cameras were an old camera and a polaroid given to her by one of her aunts. She worked in the paper as a photographer and wanted to pass them down to Val. Most thirteen year old girls would’ve preferred something a little more “up to date” but she loved it. Soon enough she had hundreds of photos of everyone — family, friends, pets, even plants. Her lunch money was spent on film for both cameras and she had shoe boxes filled with photos. She even went out of her way to learn how to print photos. 

It wasn’t until she went to highschool did she manage to save up enough (from doing chores and helping out in her uncle’s hardware store and her other uncle’s auto shop) to buy a second hand camera. Val fell in love with Photography even more. She joined any club that meant she got to use her photography skills and improve them even more. She didn’t let her passion get in the way of her academics. Her extracurriculars were the school paper and the yearbook committee. Even if it did cost her her social life. 

One night, she was forced by her friends to attend a party with them. Her family let her because they knew she needed a break from all the school work she’s been doing. It was her first night out and she wanted to make the most of it while being very careful. She didn’t want to be caught by adults in her first ever party. The rest of the night was a blur to her, having drunk more than she could handle despite knowing how to drink from her family who would let her drink under their supervision. 

( CAR ACCIDENT TW / BLOOD TW ) She was supposed to go home. Val knew that her friends were drunk and they’re better off in a taxi. But she didn’t tell them that and no one brought it up. So they all got into one of her friends' car and tried to drive them home. She barely remembered what happened next. One moment they were playing loud music and singing along to it, the next moment she woke up to everyone covered in blood. Panicking, she cried out for help and frantically shook her friends awake. To her horror, one of them wasn’t breathing. She didn’t know what to do. Keeping her hands on her dead friend, she felt a tingling sensation on her hands. Both unsure what to do and going with her instincts, she touched her friend’s head and closed her eyes. She didn’t pray, nor did she seek comfort in some entity but something inside her knew what to do. It only took a few moments thinking she was being insane thinking she could do something that her friend opened her eyes and sucked in a breath. According to the doctors they were all very lucky to have survived that accident.

After that incident, Val blamed it all on the alcohol, promising that she would never drink again. They were the lucky ones, she thought. It wasn’t something she did specifically. She wasn’t special by any means. It was just something that happens all the time. Or so she kept telling herself until she believed it. 

By the time they were all to start applying for college, she decided to take up art. It was approved by her family, but it wasn’t met with approval right away. Going into an Art program was expensive, time consuming and specifically, it was hard to find a job with an art degree. So she took up a multimedia course that both allows her to find a good job while pursuing her passion. It was a win win for everybody.

Having graduated four years later, she’s back in Forks taking a few weeks off — job hunting, while figuring out what to do with her life. Her family wanted to have her home before she ever decided to move to a bigger city to work in. Currently, she takes photos and videos for events, weddings, and parties while also working with her uncles. She doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and working without getting paid (even though they insisted) as she owes her family for getting through college.

And she seemed to be doing just fine.

           CHARACTER ALTERATIONS & DIVERGENCES

there will be a significant number of tweaks that are made to edward’s canon due to my belief that they are more consistent with who edward is and should have been . these include , but are not limited to:

edward never tampering with bella’s truck in any way shape or form. bella is entitled to make her own decisions, and while edward does still err on the overcautious & protective side, he would never strip her of her own agency. 

the thinly veiled abstinence plotline does not exist in this world. it’s unhealthy and i don’t agree with it. while edward is traditional in many respects, and definitely more formal than the average 21 year old, he is not waiting for marriage. any hesitance related to intimacy exists purely out of fear of harming bella in the process. kay says let edward be horny in 2020. 

in a similar vein, edward is not pressuring bella to marry him at all. there are no ultimatums in place regarding bella’s potential change. he still wants her to live her human life, and would like to marry her one day, but does not hold those contingencies if she makes the decision to be changed. 

edward did not visit bella’s room without her knowledge beyond  one instance  - we’re not about that in 2020. when he did, it was a moment of panic over her safety ( as described in midnight sun ), and was the instance in which she said his name in her sleep. after that, he attempted to pursue her romantically in a more traditional fashion and did not return to her bedroom until it was with her consent and knowledge. 

he is absolutely still broody and withdrawn, but let’s not pretend he hasn’t had any fun in his whole 100+ years of existence. his family has been his whole life, as well as the friends he has made -- while he has been lonely, he has never been alone. 

he still thinks he doesn’t have a soul, and is filled with a lot of self-loathing, but it’s more closely related with personal hatred and remorse for the lives he has taken than hatred of his species. while he is dubbed as one of the vampires with more self control than others, it is because he is actively fighting what he believes to be a monster inside of him -- he cannot reconcile being both man and monster, and often defers to the latter. 

i guess this isn’t so much of a canon change but ?? edward is wildly insecure and unsure of himself  - - he’s also incredibly anxious. the suave persona we see in the books is just that. really he’s just a mess. 

edward’s ‘gift’ is much less of an asset than it is an incredible annoyance and frustration. he doesn’t take pleasure in eavesdropping on the innermost thoughts of others, and is often overwhelmed by tuning in to the anguish and pain from others. he has spent decades trying to fine-tune this skill and actually uses it as infrequently as possible around strangers, unless he absolutely requires it. his ability to control it is entirely dependent on his emotional state

                                                 BACKGROUND

i am going to link the WIKI here, as most of edward’s history & personality remains unchanged , but i’ll also be giving a brief overview below, including some additions to his canon. 

20TH JUNE , 1897 - edward  is born the only child to edward and elizabeth masen. he is given all of life’s advantages due to his family’s wealth, but is estranged from his father. he is a rather sullen and often sickly boy - he becomes the center of his mother’s world, and music becomes the center of his. he is able to study with the finest instructors and discovers a virtuosic gift.

edward grows into a ‘fine’ young man, destined for a life just like his father. however, he isn’t like his father. he is sentimental, selfless, and kind where his father is stern, selfish, and withdrawn.  edward is able to bring out a smile in just about anyone, and though his wit is dry , he’s capable of making people laugh. he is a GOOD young man - - everyone says. he is GOOD.

THE GREAT WAR comes to a head, and edward ( driven by a sense of duty and bravery ) attempts to enlist. due to his childhood illnesses and the damage incurred on his lungs, he is deemed unfit for service. soon after, the first wave of the spanish influenza takes the life of his father. soon after, edward and his mother become ill. elizabeth begs the doctor responsible for their care to do what she cannot - save her son . death feels like a welcome friend after the suffering the illness had caused , but it does not come for him. instead, a new , excruciating pain . a rebirth - a living death. 

RESENTMENT - uncontrollable anger, uncontrollable thirst color edward’s first days in his new life. he does not understand the changes that had been thrust upon him. the only constant among the chaos was carlisle. carlisle and his goodness, his unfailing faith. suddenly , edward has a father , and his paramount goal was to make him proud. 

edward spends his days fighting the monster inside of him, riddled with an emptiness he could not name nor control. his talent, as carlisle described it, feels more like a curse than anything. he could read anyone -- understand their deepest most secrets, and yet he could not control or contain his own. his darkness was once again mitigated with a new light in the form of esme. esme, who reminded him so much of his own mother. esme, who had lost her own son & found someone to care for in edward. carlisle & esme and their unfailing goodness were almost too much to bear. he could not disappoint them. rather than subjecting them to emotions he couldn’t understand - he disappears. 

1927 - 1931 : the monster rears its ugly head. edward abandons a humane lifestyle and becomes judge & jury for the living. he kills - - and he kills many . he determines who is worthy of living , and seeks out those that deserve to die (  his first victim is esme’s tormentor , and tens of hundreds of men like him follow ). if he must be a monster , then he will seek out other monsters as well . eventually , his guilt consumes him and he returns , eyes crimson , to carlisle & esme . what he does not expect is their undeserved forgiveness , their unconditional love. he will forever be unworthy of such love , and this thought haunts him . he is a monster , but he must do better - - for them. 

the numbers of the cullen clan grow , and family replaces coven. they fall into a familiar rhythm - settling when they can , moving when they must . edward is grateful to be loved , to be forgiven , but he cannot find his own redemption. whatever heart of him is left goes to them - to his family. he is constant for them alone.  he watches their all-consuming romances blossom throughout time and cannot help but be reminded that he is alone . he fills his days  to the best of his ability , and time passes. 

2017 - the cullens re-settle in forks , washington . edward plays the part of recent high school graduate on a gap year in order to buy the family more time in their place of residence. time passes.

MARCH , 2018 a frozen life jumpstarts when isabella swan moves to forks. try as he might to protect her from himself , he is drawn to her. to her goodness , her intelligence , and her clumsiness. this , he realizes , must be what his family had found - - an inexplicable drawing near , the need to be close to someone. if his heart could beat , it would beat for her. 

but life is not that simple . she is fragile , and human , and he puts her at risk by simply being near her . loving her doubles that risk , and yet he does.  fiercely & unconditionally. 

MARCH , 2019  he loves her so much that he thinks it is better to leave her . he cannot see past what he is , and what he is capable of . he will not risk her life . when he thinks she is gone , he risks his . the volturi won’t take the life of a gifted vampire who has committed no crime , so he sets out to do it himself.  she , in all of her goodness , saves him , regardless of whether he is deserving of it .  but it comes at the cost - to save his life , she must sacrifice her own - - she must change. 

hi again !! it’s your eternal friend, mari, here to bring you marcus’ intro. this tragic man breaks my heart every single time so i’m here to bring some justice to him. forks will be a great for him, i just know it.

tw: death, depression

he isn’t sure where exactly he was born into his human life. all he remembers is the time he woke up the second time. it felt like a relief after the torment of the transformation, and the azure sea of the greek coast was beautiful

he had always been good at reading the room, almost instinctively knowing the connections between them. after his transformation that trait became an ability. he can identify the relationships between people and the nature of the relationship can affect his mood. 

the first years were spent learning. how to control the thirst, how to blend in. self-control was necessary in some situations, so he learned. he was alone, for the most part, only occasionally meeting with other nomads.

everything changed when he met aro. the newly-transformed vampire was full of energy and ideas and it was easy to follow him. marcus was intrigued by his plans and they made sense to him.

with aro, came didyme. if vampires fall in love, they do it quickly and irrevocably – that was exactly what happened to marcus. his loyalties didn’t belong solely to aro and the volturi any longer.

they fell in love and marcus was truly happy with didyme, so much that aro’s ambitions were less and less important to him. they didn’t need world domination, they only needed each other.

that didn’t please aro, so in order to keep marcus part of the volturi, he attempted to murder didyme. he didn’t succeed, but nobody knows that – marcus still believes didyme died all those years ago.

didyme’s supposed death destroyed marcus. the bond he had with her was irreplaceable and the loss made him apathetic and callous. he hasn’t been the man he once was in centuries.

he’s only bound to the volturi by chelsea’s gift and refuses to accept corin’s gift, choosing to live with his pain instead.

the only moments when he actually feels something is through his gift – exceptionally strong relationships animate him and they allow him to feel something.
