After completely failing at my recent attempt to have an MRI scan done by a standard tunnel scanner used in most hospitals, I was referred to a specialist ‘Open MRI scanner’ which has less effects of claustrophobia due to its more open nature in design.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that you are probably there at the open scanner after having failed the experience of the tunnel one like I did, the fear of the MRI is now already set deeply into you… or at least it was me!

I turned up to the original standard tunnel scanner with some initial excitement as it was something new. However once I was fitted with the head cage, laid onto the restrictive bed that holds you into place and then slid into the tunnel that is barely inches away from your face and body…. I was out of there!

So with this second attempt there was always going to be some trepidation at already having the feeling of ‘failure and fear’ flowing through me. I am convinced however that if the first attempt had been this different newer ‘open style’ scanner, the fear would have been far less, if maybe even non existant. I also took my mum to this second attempt, which again I believe helps make the fear and failure rate a lot less!

Due to the fact that I needed 3 different area scans to be done, the actual time I spent in the “burger bun style scanner” was two and half hours! Thats two and a half hours of “try not to move please!”. Not as easy as you might think! Its also two and a half hours of extremely loud noises (bangs, whirls and clicks). I was given some in ear plugs that were supposed to be self expanding once you placed them in your ears but this didn’t work for me and meant I had to face the noises more than I would have liked. I also had to hold a number of positions whilst wearing different halo, collar and body cage equipment that supposedly allows the scanner to take the required images.
