Condolences

Roy feels around the nightstand, his forearm blocking out the sun, the phone rings four times before he answers. The line sits in radio silence, it takes a few seconds before her voice comes through.
“What? What happened? Never mind, i’ll just meet you there in an hour.” Roy says, “Don’t go anywhere, okay? Please.”
He arrives a few minutes earlier than he expected, instead of going up to the door to knock, he sits in the car a while longer, trying to string together his words. He hasn’t seen Riza in a few months, not since they’d had dinner at Bert’s. Roy settles on trying to keep things formal, reaching over to shrug a jacket on over his sweater. Besides, things will only keep going on the same way. They’ll meet again this time, she’ll disappear, she’ll sink lower again, and somehow he finds her, months later, trying to pick herself up from some other tragedy.
Roy walks up the steps to the apartment, surprised to find the door cracked open. He lets himself in, knocking as he gets past the door frame. Roy sighs, finding her in the kitchen. “I didn’t expect you to call me. How long has it been, since Bertholdt...? What happened?”
