In order for me to feel confident with one of my songs it has to really move me. That’s how I know that I’ve written a good song for myself — it’s when I start crying. It’s when I just break out in fucking tears in the vocal booth or in the studio, and I’ll need a moment to myself.

When I hear artists say, 'Performing is what I'm meant to do', I think, Whaaaat? This ain't what you're meant to do. It ain't normal.

Maybe people know I just like music. And I don’t like fame. Maybe it’s endearing. I think I remind people of themselves. Or their friends, aunties, cousins. I write about very universal feelings. I’ll dress up sometimes or I’ll look like shit. I am just a very normal girl. Who likes very normal things.

I get so nervous on stage I can't help but talk. I try. I try telling my brain: stop sending words to the mouth. But I get nervous and turn into my grandma. Behind the eyes it's pure fear. I find it difficult to believe I'm going to be able to deliver.

I remember when I was 10, I nicked my mum’s Lauryn Hill album and listened to it every day after school in my bedroom, sitting on my little sofa bed and hoping to God that one day I’d be a singer.
