Lyzolda, the Blood Witch

Sacrificial rites take place before an audience of cheering cultists, each begging to be the next on stage.

So my LGS had a Duel Commander Tournament today and I went and played my Lyzolda deck, named “Blood, Bath, & Beyond.”

I played against a lot of high-tier decks, and honestly I just had sooooo much fun!!! The tournament was Duel Commander, using the french banlist (i.e. no sol ring). Rounds consisted of only one game, due to time constaints.

I had a bye round 1, so it was nice to just sit bat and watch my friends play. Round 2, I squared off against Nekusar, the Mindrazer. I was initially expecting some sort of grixis control deck, but was surprised when my opponent tutored turnabout. I had an active jitte on board, and opted to cast and kill mesmeric fiend with the castigation trigger on the stack. I saw my opponent’s hand was Yawgmoth’s Will, High Tide, Cabal Ritual, Mind’s Desire, Tendrils of Agony, and Windfall. In all honesty, his hand was crazy stacked!!! There wasn’t really a clear-cut card to take in my mind, but I decided to permanently exile the turnabout, seeing it as one of the strong enablers in my opponent’s hand.

Round 3, I faced Mayael the Anima, which seemed to be very focused on using Mayael to plop down large creatures. Unfortunately, this opponent only had a single green source, and I managed to kill Birds of Paradise before cards like Asceticism could hit the field. Near the end of the game, my opponent cast a Conduit of Ruin and tutored Platinum Emperion, playing it the following turn. However, I had dealt a sizable amount of damage, and used Zealous Conscripts to take the Emperion and swing for lethal!

Round 4 was my first match against Tasigur. It was an interesting match where I had an active Jitte threatening the board, until my opponent cast Mystical Teachings for Abrupt Decay. Knowing about the Decay, I cast an Ob Nixilis to destroy Tasigur, instead of Liliana of the Veil. My opponent killed Ob Nixilis the following turn with Creeping Tarpit. Seeing that Ob had resolved, I played Grave Titan, whose zombie army ultimately won me that game.

After 4 rounds of Swiss, I was undefeated, and the top seed going into the top 8. I chose to go first each game, and my opponent in the quarterfinals was a combo-centric Scion of the Ur-Dragon player. Having lost to Scion in the past, I was concerned that my tournament would end here. However, the deck had a slow start, and I was able to reach a board state with an active Mogis and and Olivia Voldaren, and sealed away the game.

In the semis, I played against Tasigur again, and once more, Olivia Voldaren pulled her weight, stealing Tasigur away from my opponent and leaving an opening for lethal.

Then there were the finals. Lyzolda, the Blood Witch vs Grand Arbiter Augustin IV. Rakdos vs Azorius. It was a perfectly fitting finals. I led of with an early Tectonic Edge, and then turned my Thespian’s Stage into a second Tec Edge. I aggreesively attacked my opponent’s non-basic blue sources, destroying a total of 3 blue producing lands after drawing a wasteland. Then, on my opponent’s end step, I went to Kolaghan’s Command, targeting their Cursed Totem and making them discard a card. They tapped their only two blue sources and used counterspell, leaving up triple white. I untapped, thought for a little bit, and then paid 24 life with hatred, pumping my bloodghast for lethal!
