“ GNOSSIENNE. ”     adjusting his glasses,   looking over at the young boy across from him.   nathaniel does his best to conceal true feelings,   face unwavering,   almost burning into the other;   a sense of déjà vu looking at ricky.   the curly haired boy reminding him all too much of himself when he was younger.   swallowing,   glancing down at the empty notebook ready to take notes.     “ a moment of awareness that someone you've known for years still has a private and mysterious inner life,   and somewhere in the hallways of their personality is a door locked from the inside,   a stairway leading to a wing of the house that you've never fully explored—an unfinished attic that will remain maddeningly unknowable to you,   because ultimately neither of you has a map,   or a master key,   or any way of knowing exactly where you stand. ”

FEIGNED SHOCK,   A GASP.     “ of course,   ricky!   would i lie to you?   you are most definitely one of my most favourite patients i’ve had. ”     a wide grin plastered across her face;   that super magic smile,   a twinkle in her eye as she holds the clipboard to her chest and looks down at the young boy.   so,   she may have been lying the teensiest.   for every child that came through was her favourite—they all were,   how could they not be?   each special and different in their own unique way that always left a lasting imprint on arizona.     “ i promise this isn’t some prank.   you did suffer a mild concussion and you’re probably gonna be off that skateboard for at least twelve weeks. ”

IT HAPPENS BEFORE SHE REALISES,   the stammering beneath her chest,   palms growing sweaty as the colour drains from her face;   crimson flushing over porcelain cheeks.   whoa,   okay.   call it something simple,   she’s kissed others before   —   kissed her friends on the nose,   the cheek.   but this wasn’t that.   it’s all too quiet between them,   air hanging all too heavy,   fairy lights decorating the room,   illuminating their faces yellow and orange.   she swallows the lump in her throat,   lifting fingers to slowly tuck curls behind her ear,   almost afraid to look over at ricky.   mainly for the embarrassment she feels,   the shade of red across her face all too telling even in this lighting.   she inhales,   fingers curling round the ledge she sits on as she looks to him,   the edges of her lips hesitating before twitching into something small.     “ what was that for,   boing. ”
