Charlie looked up from her sandwich mid bite. “Hmph?” She asked around a mouthful of Nutella.
“You heard me, and don’t play dumb. That act doesn’t work on me.” Sam said, taking a seat across from her. Sighing, Charlie finished chewing and set down her sandwich. She’d avoided the topic as Sam had seemed almost happy, but if she wanted her thoughts she would get them.
“I’m not pouting.” She pointed out first. “As far as why I’m…concerned-” Charlie quickly rushed on as Sam scoffed, ready to interrupt. “I get that you’ve seen these blokes in your head since before you met me. And I get that what you’ve seen has been enough that you trust them-”“I don’t.” Sam interjected quickly.“You do, otherwise we wouldn’t even be here.” Charlie insisted. “But I don’t. Dan is an addict with a bad temper, he’s a ticking time bomb. And Reece would clearly do anything for his brother. We’re not their priority, our goals are only theirs so long as the see a six million dollar imaginary briefcase at the end of this.” She leaned back, picking the crust off her sandwich. “I want to trust them, but I don’t. And I don’t think you should either.”

She understood why they had to split up. The Division was now searching for Dan and Reece James, two brothers traveling together, so it only made sense that they split up. But why she had to travel with Dan…It wasn’t like he liked Sam any better, but she was fairly certain he hated her on some level.
“I can sleep on the floor.” She muttered, setting her bag on the dresser. They’d be meeting with Reece and Sam in a few days, and this awkwardness would be over. She missed the days when it was just her and Sam.“Don’t be stupid, the bed’s big enough. I ain’t gonna touch you.” He paused and she saw him looking at her in the cracked mirror. “Unless I disgust you that much, pipsqueak. I’ll take the floor I guess.”
“Just sleep in the shitty bed, it’s fine for one night.” She sighed, grabbing a change of clothes and going to shower. Their public ruse had been fairly easy, Dan was a giant next to her and had kept her tucked close to his side, an arm slung over her shoulder with a grin on his face. There was no doubting that he was a good liar, he’ll she’d almost believed him herself.
She spent far too long in the shower, letting the hot water work the kinks out of her neck. By the time she reappeared, Dan had fallen asleep in the arm chair, apparently in the middle of taking off his boots.
For a moment, she considered leaving him there and claiming the bed for herself; it wasn’t her fault that he was a stubborn jackass. But in truth, Dan hadn’t been totally horrible to her, and she knew for a fact that he was in the early stages of withdrawal.
“Come on, big boy.” She said gently, pulling him up by the front of his shirt. Groggily he sat up, far more exhausted than she’d initially realized, and she helped him stumble to the bed. The moment he was horizontal, he was out again and she rolled her eyes before grudgingly removing his other shoe and covering him with the thin blanket. In the end, her desire to sleep in a real bed overcame any discomfort she had about sleeping next to him, and she crawled to the edge furthest from him. After what felt like hours, Charlie finally fell into a restless sleep to thoughts of the Division coming for her through the vents, and softer, more soothing, the deep and even sounds of Dan’s breathing.
It was unclear when she stopped being cold in the night, but when she woke up, she was warm and comfortable, her face pressed into a pillow that…was…moving?
“Did you know that you talk in your sleep?” Dan murmured, his voice rumbling through his chest, against her cheek. His arm was slung comfortably over her and she could feel his thumb unconsciously stroking her back. “It’s pretty cute. I thought you were awake at first.”
“I just kissed your forehead, chill.”
“I will not chill, you can’t do that in front of them!” Charlie whined, gesturing violently in the direction of the Spectre brothers. “I’m the shortest of you lot and I don’t want them thinking they can be chummy forehead kissers around me. I will end them if they try. And you know better than to do that too, it makes me feel like a kid and I hate that.” She grumbled, ignoring the way Sam was lovingly smirking at her.
“Stop with the tongue thing, it’s strangely attractive.”
Charlie paused and glanced up, tongue running across her split lip. Dan was shooting her a funny look, his eyes intent on her mouth and she felt a blush creep up her cheeks before she grinned. “Oh, so you find me strangely attractive. A backhanded complement, but a complement none the less. I’m flattered.”
“I kissed you because we were drunk.”
For a moment, Wes didn’t say anything before turning and sliding the omelette onto her plate. “Right, and I saved you because I wanted a roommate.” He retorted sarcastically before taking a seat across from her and waving his fork. “Don’t worry about it, Faith. We all have our weak moments.”

Every inch of his body hurt, and he was fairly certain that he had more than one broken bone and wound that needed his immediate attention. There was also a suspicious sense of lightheadedness that he couldn’t decide whether it was from blood loss or the radical notion that his living nightmare was finally over. Either possibility seemed likely.
“What?” He croaked, eyes dazed and staring down at a sprig of grass that was poking through the half melted snow.
“This is goodbye, right? You vanquished your demons and can go on to live a normal life now. Maybe crank out a series of best sellers based off the deal.” Her voice was light, but he heard what was laced beneath it, expectancy.
Looking up at her, crystal blue eyes met emerald green and he blinked, contemplating her long enough that he could see her regret her words. He’d seen her do this before, pull into herself as a self preservation tactic, but he’d thought that they were past that.
“It doesn’t have to be.” He said, he would have stood if he wasn’t afraid his legs would fail him. “I heard New Zealand is supposed to be beautiful this time of year.”
“Please go.”
“No.” Charlie answered, limping over to the barely standing table and lowering herself in the chair with a hiss of pain. she had seen Sam upset countless times before, several of those occasions because of her, but this was something different. This was something bad. The look on Sam’s face, what she saw there? It was the kind of thing that created people like her, people like Dan. The kind of thing that destroyed genuinely kind people and turned them to miserable wretches.
It was the dirty wallpaper that tipped her off first. “”Your parents aren’t here.” She pointed out, recognizing the home from the detailed stories the blonde had told her over the course of their friendship. It was almost impossible to imagine the vividly happy place beneath its bombed out remains, but she could still see it - here and there.
“This was my home.” Sam whispered.
“A house is just a building,” Charlie said, using words that Sam had once told her. “A home is people. And you have us. And we’ll find your parents.”
“There’s nothing we can do to bring them back.”
“Are you kidding?” Charlie demanded, whirling around to look at the blonde. “You of all people are saying that to me?” She crossed the small, dark room that they’d been holed up in. “There’s always something we can do,” She said, yanking the blondes chin up with a hard hand. “They never abandoned us, not once. We cannot abandon them. We go out, we look, you can hack the Geth and I can make them reconsider their residency on this planet. But the thing we are not doing is leaving those men behind! Are you in the bloody Alliance or aren’t you?!”
“You chose them over me.”
Reece glanced at his brother, who was bloody and grinning like a psycho, as though the four of them hadn’t just been nearly killed.
“Of course I did, you would have done the same thing.” He huffed, taking as much of Dan’s weight as he could. “Though it looks like your girlfriend did a good job of making sure you didn’t die.”
“Yeah, how the hell did she do that?” Dan asked, stumbling a bit as they reached the Drop Shuttle.
“I have no idea how any of that shit works. All I know is that the look she gave me when I tried to interrupt her? I’m pretty sure she can kill with it.” His brother chuckled and leaned back into the seat as the shuttle took off.
“How’s Sammie?”
Reece winced and rubbed at the back of his neck. “Pissed that I grabbed them and not you.” His brother nodded, inspecting a wound in his side before looking back at Reece.
“Those crazy brats would make good Spectres.”
“God help us.”
“I need you.”
Blood and sweat stung his eyes and made his face slick between her hands.
“Reece, please, please. I need you, I can’t do this alone. I need a second set of hands.” She placed his hands on the blossoming black stain that was spreading across the front of Dan’s shirt. It wasn’t the first time he’d had his brothers blood on his hands, but there had never been this much, and Dan had never looked worse.
“Sam.” He croaked. The blonde’s eyes snapped up to his face, assessing. If Reece went into shock now, if he couldn’t help her, Dan was going to die.
“It looks worse than it is. Just keep pressure, I have a seeley pack here somewhere.” One hand was rifling through the med pack before Charlie was suddenly there, handing Sam the instruments she’d been looking for. And then her hands were over Reece’s, holding them down even more firmly. If she noticed their trembling she didn’t say anything. Her face was stoic, calm, and he realized that this was her entity, this was her zone, just as it was Dan’s. Mayhem, chaos... This was their world.
“He’ll be fine, Reece.” She told him, “He’s a warrior.” That was when he noticed the golden dome around them and Sam glanced to the side. “It’s her barrier, she’s been working on it with Dan.” She explained, “Nothing’s getting through here any time soon. Move your hands.” Both Reece and Charlie removed their hands at the same time and Sam placed a seal over Dan’s abdomen. “He’ll be fine till we get him to the medbay, then the real work starts.”
