Do you agree that different races have different characteristics? For example, black people are likely to be good runners, or that asians tend to be good in information technology and stuff like that.
I’m not an anthropologist, but I suppose there might be some truth to that on a biological level? (Maybe not the Asians and technology bit since I am pretty sure that is less about nature than about nurture)
But that doesn’t change the fact that I believe in equality of all races and genders. The equality I mean isn’t factual equality, it’s equality as a moral ideal and equal consideration.
If giving equal rights to people of all races/genders was dependent on the fact that certain characteristics of those groups (such as intelligence, strength, etc) are equal, and science found an actual biological correlation between race/gender and those things one day (such as race A’s average IQ being 5 points higher than race B’s), that would instantly justify racism/sexism. That is why I do not actually care much about factual equality of the genders/races. It’s not the basis of my beliefs.
That being said, you obviously cannot infer anything about an individual’s intellectual capacities, talents, or skills merely based on their race/gender. But I hope that was clear from the beginning.
