I haven’t listened to dance music in a club for years, so the whole “why are you making dance music when no-one can dance” discourse has kind of passed me by. But maybe that explains why lots of the dance music I’ve heard this year has been kind of introspective, more a cocoon of sound than a space for movement: Kelly Lee Owens’s Inner Song, Pantha du Prince’s Conference of Trees (IMO a return to form after The Triad), Fakear’s Everything will Grow Again, Ela Minus’s Acts of Rebellion.
Which is not to say I haven’t been listening to straight-up bangers, too: German garage from Cinthie, 90s rave from Lxury, extremely wholesome Australians PNAU, queen of brain-meltingly dumb trance Camden Cox.
