Day 1: Blind Date
(Pairings: Matthew Luther/Merula Snyde, andâŠwellâŠthat would be telling.)
âNo.â
âItâll be fun-â
âNot for me it wonât-â
âYou donât know that-â
âYes I do!â Matthew snapped, before immediately following up with â...Sorry. Didnât mean to yell. It justâŠstresses me out, ok?â
It was Friday morning, and the last of the students were filing into the Great Hall for breakfast. Already at Ravenclaw table enjoying some toast were Andre Egwu, Rowan Khanna, Corey Hayden (who had hopped over from Gryffindor table) and Matthew Luther, who was nervously twirling a fork in his right hand, as silver as the bracelet on his wrist.
âThereâs no need to apologise, Matt.â Rowan reassured him, âWe get that this sort of thing isnât what youâre used to-â
âBut we think you ought to do it anyway.â interrupted Corey. âItâs a Blind Date, after all. Itâs just for one night, and itâs not like it means anything.â
âI know that,â Matthew said, âitâs justâŠIâm not good at those sorts of things, yknow?â
âWhich is why you need practice.â Andre pointed out. âAgain, itâs just one night, it doesnât mean anything, itâs justâŠitâd be nice to see you put yourself out there, Curse-Breaker.â
âYeah, and Andreâs been planning this for months.â Corey reminded the table, âYouâve got to be there, youâre the Hero of Hogwarts!â
âIâŠIâŠâ Matthew squirmed in his seat. âFine. Iâll go. IâllâŠok.â
âAs long as youâre sure, Matt.â Rowan said, smiling.
âDonât worry, Iâll make sure youâre well dressed for tonight.â Andre said cheerfully. âJust try to enjoy yourself!â âEasier said than done.â Matthew said under his breath. He finished his breakfast (as much as he could with his nervous stomach ache) and started to leave the Great Hall, wondering how on earth his day could get worse. Then, as he got to the great golden door, he found himself face to face with Merula Snyde.
âOh. Luther. What do you want?!â Merula snarled, clutching her satchel.
â...YouâŠyouâve come up to me.â Matthew pointed out. Merula blinked, before shaking her head furiously.
âNevermind! What were you smartarses talking about?!â she demanded, gesturing to the Ravenclaw table.
âOhâŠum, itâs nothing, itâs ah, you knowâŠâ Matthew stammered, hoping that Corey wouldnât say anything. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to be going his way.
âAndreâs organised a Blind Date event tonight!â Corey declared, some of the other students looking around and gossiping. Matthew waved them down and turned back to Merula.
âOk, so why do you care?â Merula asked, âitâs not like youâre the one-â she paused looking at Matthewâs face. She covered her mouth, but burst into laughter anyway.
â...Yeah, I know, I knowâŠâ Matthew sighed, as Merula cackled.
âYou!? A blind date!? You?!â she laughed, clutching her stomach, âOh, Merlin, that isâŠ.good luck, mate.â After a few seconds of more laughter, she sighed and pushed the hair out of her face.
âThanks, Merula.â Matthew muttered. âI guess youâre not taking part, then?â
âAre you kidding me? Of course not.â Merula replied. âNo way anyoneâs pressuring me into doing something stupid like that.â
âYeah, and if you did thereâd be a tiny chance of us ending up on a date-â Matthew thought out loud. âUm. I mean. Um.â
âY-Yeah, uh, thatâd be. Um. You know, erâŠâ Merula stuttered, both her and Matthewâs cheeks now going shades of red and pink. They were broken out of their flustering by Andre, who tapped Matthew on the shoulder.
âCome on, Curse-Breaker. We have to get you ready for tonight. See you around, Merula!â Andre said, flipping his scarf back and leaving the Great Hall. Matthew gave Merula a small wave as he left with the other Ravenclaws. Merula stood there for a moment, running her hands up and down her satchelâs straps.
 ***
That night, Matthew nervously pulled at his red shirtâs collar and tightened his bracelet as he stared at himself in the mirror. The outfit Andre had picked out for him, red shirt with black jeans (Andre had noticed that smart-casual worked well for Matt) was indeed fairly stylish, definitely better than what he usually wore, but he was still incredibly nervous. What was his date going to say when she found out that he very much didnât want to be there? What were other people going to say? How was he going to make a good first impression to someone who hadnât met him before? Who wasnât used to his nervousness and stuttering? What would Merula say? What would-
âCurse-Breaker! Itâs time!â Andre called. Matthewâs stomach was still hurting as he went down into the Common Room.
âLooking good, Matt!â said Rowan, offering a thumbs-up and a smile.
âThanks, Ro.â Matthew replied sheepishly. âArenât you going?â âI would, but Iâve really got to get this homework done and an early nightâs sleep.â
âBut Rowan, tomorrowâs Saturday.â Matthew pointed out.
âAnd?â
Before Matthew could say anything else, it was time to go. He followed Andre out of Ravenclaw Tower, still clutching his stomach, just as heâd done for the last twelve or so hours. Andre led him down to the Great Hall, where the four long tables had been replaced with more than a dozen tables, each with two chairs by them. Already, other people taking part (who presumably actually wanted to be there) were starting to sit down.
âRight, Curse-Breaker, youâre on table number 6.â Andre said, pointing at a table on the left side of the hall. âYour blind date will be there soon!â
Matthew nodded, moved to the table with a golden â6â on it and sat down. His nervousness, as always, had developed into full-blown fear. Someone was about to come up to the table expecting someone who wanted to be here. What was wrong with him? Why had he taken the place of someone who might have actually enjoyed social events? All in all, Matthew hadnât really considered the possibility that his Blind Date would be someone he knew. His luck had been so abysmal lately, he had assumed heâd be grouped with someone who was in the year above or below. But it was at that moment that someone Matthew knew started walking towards table 6. It was probably, but not definitely, the last person Matthew expected to see here.
âTonks?!" exclaimed Matthew, as a girl with short pink hair rocked up to the table in a yellow suit, smiling brilliantly.
âWotcher, Matt!â she yelled, despite being 5 feet away from him, âSurprised to see you here!â âF-Feelingâs mutual.â Matthew said, as Tonks said down with more force than was needed. âI thought you said you werenât really, um, interested inâŠdating andâŠstuff.â
âYeahâŠbut I also thought thisâd be a laugh.â Tonks pointed out. âYou look nice!â
âThanksâŠâ Matthew said, pushing the hair out of his face, âAndre put it together for me. You look great too, by the way.â
âYeah, I do. Andre says I'm one of the few lucky people who can pull off yellow.â Tonks said, proudly. Matthew nodded, the knots in his stomach untying themselves. Relief settled into him. Tonks was his friend, not a complete stranger, and now Matthew might actually be able to enjoy tonight.
âSo, how come youâre here doing this?â Tonks asked, leaning back on her chair, âI mean, donât get me wrong, itâs great that youâre here, but, ahâŠâ
âItâs not my scene, yeah.â Matthew said, nodding. âYeah, it umâŠwell, Corey and Andre, theyâŠthey really wanted me to do it, soâŠâ
Tonks frowned. âBlimey, no wonder you looked so tense.â Matthew squirmed as he saw her smile fade. âIâm sorry. I know I shouldnât have done it, I should have let someone else take my place, I-â
âWhat are you talking about?â Tonks asked, staring at him with a curious look on her face, her hair going a bright blue, âYou donât have to apologise for anything. I saw Corey over there with you this morning. I donât see him around here.â
Matthew looked around. She was right, Corey was nowhere to be seen. Neither is Merula, he noticed.
âLook, Matt, um, youâve got a good head on your shoulders and all,â Tonks said, âbut sometimes I worry about you. And itâs nothing youâve done,â she added, seeing that he was about to start apologising again. âI justâŠI dunno. I just want to make sure you can actually enjoy going out and socialising, instead of it being a chore.â
Matthew nodded. âI guess youâre right. AndâŠmaybe I was a little too pessimistic about the whole thingâŠâ
âCanât say I blame you, though.â Tonks said, her smile returning. âI mean, youâre the Hero of Hogwarts, arenât you? Rumours do swirl about your love life.â
âThey do?â Matthew said incredulously. âI meanâŠdo youâŠumâŠâ
Tonks snorted and chuckled, in that way she always did. âYeah, Iâve heard a few things. Like, ah, you and ChiaraâŠâ
âThat,â said Matthew, pausing for emphasis, âisâŠok, we had one kiss, but weâre just friends now, and weâre both happy with that.â
âGlad to hear it.â said Tonks, smiling. âAnd of courseâŠthereâs the whole thing regarding your rival.â
Matthewâs cheeks went pink. He knew exactly who she was talking about. âThatâsâŠok, thatâsâŠâ
âCause you had that one accidental kiss âcos of that changeling, right?â Tonks asked. Matthew was once again squirming in his seat.
âUmâŠyeahâŠbut thatâsâŠwell itâs umâŠâ Matthew paused, looked around, and leant forward across the table. Tonks did the same, increasing the size of her ears.
âWeâŠmight have had another accidental kiss.â âIâm sorry what-â âLook, before you say anything-â âAnother one?!â Tonks said, dumbfounded. âHow do you have two accidental kisses? Thatâs crackers! Howâd this one happen?â she asked.
âWell, it was in the forest.â Matthew explained. âWe talked to Torvus, found out about how he knew Jacob, he picked a fight with me, I got hit with an arrow, Merula helped tend to the wound, the Centaurs started stampeding, she got pushed back andâŠuhâŠyeah.â
Tonks blinked. âThatâsâŠquite a story, mate. Iâd say you were lying, but I donât think Iâve ever heard you lie.â
Matthew shrugged. âYeah, I dunno. Whenever I try to lie, I mostly burst out laughing.â
Tonks smirked. âMind if I put that to the test?â
Matthew blinked. He didnât feel that afraid anymore. âNot at all.â he replied, deciding to simply ride this wave of confidence until it petered out.
âAlright then, Matt: Do you like Merula?â âUmâŠâ Matthew began, a smile already forming across his face. âOf course. Sheâs my friend, in a way.â
Tonks sighed. âMattâŠyou know thatâs not what I meant.â
Matt was having to bite his lip. âWell IâŠyou knowâŠâ
âGo on. Try saying the words âI donât have a crush on Merula.ââ
Matthew took a deep breath. âI donât have a-â
He got that far before he started heaving with laughter.
 âKnew it!â said Tonks, confidently.
âOkâŠfineâŠitâs entirely possible.â Matthew admitted. âHappy now?â
âEcstatic.â Tonks said, grinning.
Matthew sighed again. âWhat about you? Anyone youâveâŠgot your eye on?â
Tonks shrugged. âEh, dunno. Iâve been hanging out with Tulip a lot, but itâs very professional. Pranks only.â
âGotcha.â Matthew nodded, âI knew you two would become fast friends.â
âStroke of genius, that was.â Tonks said, âUgh, what a day that was. Seeing those Boggarts, that weird wandless magicâŠwildâŠâ
âYou were pretty good down there too, y'know. You were incredibly quick on the draw with Riddikulus. I guess thatâs why youâre so fun to duel.â
âThanks, mate.â Tonks said, her hair going slightly red. âThatâsâŠreally, really nice of you to say.â
It was around half ten in the evening that things started to wrap up, and Matthew and Tonks left the Great Hall, Matthew nodding to Andre. As they left, they also saw Corey near Andre. They saw Matthew and waved.
âLooks like you had fun after all!â they yelled.Â
Matthew sighed. âLooks like someone canât take their own advice.â
âNo need to be like that, Matt, we all know you need help not hiding up in Ravenclaw Tower!â
Tonks looked from Matthew to Corey. Then, from within her blazerâs pocket she pulled out a Dungbomb, removed the pin, and promptly chucked it at Corey.
âRun!â she hissed, taking Matthewâs wrist, her hand touching the silver bracelet, and leading him down the staircases. They heard the poof and the hiss of gas and knew that it had worked.
âYou were carrying a Dungbomb the whole time?â Matthew asked, looking at the stink cloud above them. âI always have one just in case!â Tonks replied, cheerfully.
In a few minutesâ time, they had made it to just outside Hufflepuff House. They were both breathing heavily, but had massive grins on their faces.
â...thanks a bunch for that, Tonks.â Matthew panted, trying to catch his breath. âYou and Tulip really are two of a kind.â
âAnd I didnât know you could be such a snarker.â Tonks said, her hair switching between orange and red. âMerula would be proud.â
They looked at the door to the Hufflepuff Common Room, surrounded by barrels. Tonks yawned, looking for the right barrel.
âUmm,â Matthew began, âTonightâs beenâŠreally fun. I donât think Iâve laughed that hard in ages.â
âYeah! Tonight was wicked!â Tonks said, âAnd uh, Iâll keep my lips sealed about your second kiss with The Most Surly Witch at Hogwarts.â
Matthew chuckled, looking at Tonks. Her hair had gone a mix of orange and red, which worked with her yellow suit to give the sense of a warm fire. âReally, though. Thank you, Tonks. I donât think I would have enjoyed tonight if it was anyone but you.â
Tonks moved away from the barrels, and over to Matthew. She gave him a toothy grin, before standing up on her tiptoes and kissing Matthew on his cheek. âMatt, youâre too sweet.â She said, winking, before knocking five times on a barrel and heading into Hufflepuff House. He held his hand up to his cheek, which was now pink along with the rest of his face, as he began the trek back to Ravenclaw Tower. On the way, he walked past the Slytherin Dungeons, outside of which stood Merula and Ismelda Murk. âI see that you had fun tonight.â Merula said bitterly. âGuess you got your stomach in a twist for nothing. As always.â
âHello to you too, Merula.â said Matthew, offering a small wave. âYou too, Ismelda.â
Ismelda grunted in return. Merula scoffed.
Matthew cleared his throat. âSo-â
âItâs none of your business, but for your information, weâre waiting up for Lee. He had no qualms going into a blind date.â
Matthew nodded. âSee you around then, ârula. Iâll try to get your broom back to you by the end of the week, ok?â
â...Youâd better.â Merula snapped. Matthew sighed, and continued on his way back to Ravenclaw Tower. He didnât see Merulaâs cheeks go red, nor did he hear her mutter â...He called me ârulaâŠâ
