GO Rom Com Spotlight: @luritto
The superb @luritto has claimed Notting Hill to adapt for Good Omens in the Good Omens Rom Com Event.
For reference, here’s some information about the source material!
Synopsis of Notting Hill: William Thacker (Hugh Grant) is a London bookstore owner whose humdrum existence is thrown into romantic turmoil when famous American actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) appears in his shop. A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair. As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love.
We spent some time chatting about how the adaptation is coming so far, as well as future plans for it! Now, get to know @luritto (also here on Ao3) a little better!
goromcom: You chose to adapt Notting Hill as your rom com. Has this movie been a favorite of yours, or is there some other reason you chose it?
luritto: I do love Notting Hill. I like that it’s Hugh Grant who has to change his life to get the happy ending, that the power imbalance is different to most tropes. However, I literally woke up from a dead sleep with the thought “Notting Hill AU!” in my brain. I sent a message to a few people in the middle of the night so I would remember and it’s been percolating in my head ever since.
goromcom: What’s your favorite moment of your chosen rom com, and are you looking forward to presenting it in your adaptation? Any loose plans for that scene that you can share?
luritto: My favourite moment from Notting Hill is probably when they try to climb the fence into the park and the “whoopsie-daisies” line. I’m really looking forward to writing my version of it, it’ll be quite different but you’ll know it when you see it. All I’ll say is that it’ll be tickety-boo!
goromcom: Do you plan to stick very closely to the story beats of the original movie, or make bigger changes?
luritto: I do plan to stick pretty closely to the beats of the movie. I think it lends itself well to adaptation but I don’t want to reproduce the Notting Hill script with the names crossed out! I’m a simple creature with simple desires, I’m putting smut in it.
goromcom: Your fellow simple desires creatures salute you. :)
What’s an interesting decision you’ve made in your planning so far–a notable casting decision, a changing of venue, or some other plan you have to paint Good Omens all over your rom com?
luritto: I think my best casting decision so far has been Young Shadwell as Spike. He’ll be an excellent foil to my Aziraphale as a housemate. I’m also changing career for my star. Crowley is a rock star rather than an actor. I hope there’ll be enough of a difference to keep readers engaged in the story!
goromcom: Look for the Good Omens Notting Hill AU, coming soon, directly from my fellow dinosaur buff, @luritto/Lurlur!
