PLEASE. Especially if you’re a PoC! The chance of finding African-American or Hispanic matches in the stem cell database was a frighteningly small percentage. I think my mom (we’re white) had a 60% chance of finding a match, and she thought that was scary, but the doctor told us African-American chances are ~30% and Hispanic even lower. Just because there aren’t as many people of those races signing up as donors. 

If you can, please sign up to donate! I’m not sure how the bone marrow donation goes, but stem cell harvesting is basically just like giving blood. You just have to take some drugs for a couple weeks beforehand that will stimulate your stem cell production (most common side effect is some mild bone pain), and then they harvest them by taking your blood, pulling out the stem cells and some plasma (IIRC) and putting the rest back in (probably with saline; that’s what they did when I used to donate plasma). 

My mom was super lucky to find a good stem cell donor for her, because it’s NOT AT ALL like blood or organ donation. I am my mother’s ONLY daughter and my chance of being a match to her was like 1%. (I gave them some blood anyway, just in case. No luck.) My uncle (her brother) had a 25% chance of being a match (but he had ALS, so that was a no-go). Some random stranger somewhere in America was a 13/14 match to my mom, oddly enough. (They need 10/10 to even go ahead, but there’s an extra 4 genes they look for that increase the odds of it going smoothly.)

Don’t think that just because you’re related to someone that you’ll be an automatic candidate if something happens to them. Don’t think that you can cross that bridge when and if you come to it. Sign up to donate (I can’t because of the melanoma) and encourage others to do so as well so that if you or someone you care about needs the help, it’s there.
