Luis Navas: Some Important Facts about Verb+Ing Modifier
The first thing that I would like to inform you about verb+ing modifiers is that they denote actions. Why? This is because they are formed by adding ‘ing’ to the first form of a verb.
Example:
John made mouthwatering pudding, using dry fruits.
In this sentence ‘using dry fruits’ denotes the action of making mouthwatering pudding.
If you want to write this sentence in another way, you will have to write: John used dry fruits and made mouthwatering pudding using the same.
The second thing that you would have to keep in mind is that verb-ing modifier depends upon where and how it is used in the sentence. The verb-ing modifiers come at three places in a sentence generally.
- After a comma
- Without out comma
- Before the comma or in the beginning of the sentence
1: Verb-ing Modifier after a Comma:
When verb-ing modifier comes after a clause and is preceded by comma, it describes the entire preceding clause. The description may be either additional information about the preceding clause or it can be result of the same.
Examples:
She made beautiful bouquet, arranging pretty roses.
This example provides additional information regarding the preceding clause. If you see the first clause you get the complete idea that she made beautiful bouquet. Now, the second part provides information as how she made the beautiful bouquet and the answer is arranging pretty roses.
Luis Navas writes English Grammar blogs, helping students get good command at the language.
In this example verb+ing modifier again provide additional information about the preceding clause. The preceding clause is a complete sentence that indicates that Luis Navas writes English Grammar blogs. Now, the verb-ing modifier informs that he writes blogs to help student get good command at the language.
Luis Navas writes English Grammar blog, getting lots of appreciation from students and their parents.
In this sentence you see that Luis Navas writes blogs on English Grammar. The preceding clause gives you a complete idea. Now, the verb-ing modifier informs the result of his blog writing. He informs the result that he gets lots of appreciation from students and their parents for writing blogs.
An important thing that you must keep in your mind is that when you use verb-ing modifier after a comma that the verb-ing must show a relation with the subject of the preceding clause.
Verb+ing Modifier without Comma:
When verb+ing modifier is used without being preceded by a comma, it denotes the noun or pronoun before it.
Luis Navas is writing English Grammar blogs helping the students.
In this sentence the verb-ing modifier explains the noun phrase English Grammar blogs and informs that the blogs help the students.
Before the Comma or in the Beginning of the Sentence:
When you use verb-ing modifier in the beginning, it demands a comma before the clause. Make sure the subject should be one.
Examples:
Shouting at his wife, he left his home.
This sentence clearly indicates that he firstly shouted at his wife and then left his home.
Turning to the left, you will see a pond.
This sentence indicates that you will see a pond as you turn to the left.
Lastly, I will say that I, Luis Navas, would say that cram these rules as they would be very much helpful for you.
