in honor of lucy simon, some of my favorite moments from the secret garden soundtrack:
~the buildup of mistress mary quite contrary as everyone dies
~the opening of there’s a girl in all its intense, gothic glory
~the harmonies around the lines “there in a house sits a lonely man still haunted by her beauty asking what a life can be when naught remains but duty.”
~really, all of the house upon the hill harmonies
~the opening “ooo” of i heard someone crying
~the three part harmony of i heard someone crying
~the dreamy waltz opening to a girl in the valley
~the way the dance just... cuts off when mary enters
~”spring i say” and really any time when dickon jumps up into his higher register in winter’s on the wing
~how much that flute sounds like a bird and has so much personality
~the entire bridge of a bit of earth, but especially the horns
~the transition between storm i and lily’s eyes
~lily’s eyes, in its entirety
~how chaotic final storm gets with its nine part harmony
~the end of act one instrumental of come to my garden as mary enters the door
~the way neville and rose’s parts in the quartet have a rigid rhythm whereas archie lily’s are legato and dreamlike
~the string version of the girl i mean to be in the middle of the quartet as archie leaves
~the wick vamp
~how perfectly the come to my garden and lift me up melodies fit together
~the sheer beauty that is a bit of earth (reprise)
~hold on being beautiful and moving and in my range so it has become my go-to audition song
~the driving force of the instrumentals of where in the world that only get more intense as the song goes on
~everything about how could i ever know, but especially the octave jump on the word “forgive” and the phrase immediately following that
~echoing a girl in the valley (lily and archie’s hello) in how could i ever know (their goodbye)
~the chorus all slowly exiting in the finale until it’s eventually just albert and lily singing and then just lily
~ending the finale with the same chime the opening began with

One day I dream of writing a full analysis of The Secret Garden musical but for now, an analysis of one single song will suffice.
I did a thing
and by “thing” I mean published this rant about music theory and dead characters
check it out friends and let me know what you think!
Doctor Zhivago Cadogan Hall Concert
Does anyone have any full audio from this concert? Huge fan of the show, Celinde and Ramin so this production was a dream come true and I am dying to hear it!
