The Hunger Writing Games
This is a game I designed for our university's English Society Hunger Games party tonight based on Lucha Libro:
Beforehand, generate a list of 30 or so random words and 10 titles of dystopian or apocalyptic narratives.
Then, gather a bunch of people and divide them into 5 "districts." Select "tributes" from two districts. Give them three words from the random list and, using two Google docs and a projector, invite the two tributes to the docs and give them five minutes to write a story using the words. Then, have the rest of the group vote on the better story and give the winning district a point. After letting each district face each other once, determine a winner. Any ties can be determined by a sudden death round.
Using Live Code, I developed some simple software to randomize the words and matches. It went really well and was a fun way to celebrate the movie coming out this week and tie it in with the English Society.

It's a twist on Lucha Libre, Mexico’s version of pro wrestling [...] New writers don masks and head onto a stage where they’re given three random words, a laptop hooked up to a gigantic screen, and five minutes to write a short story. At the end of a match, the losing writer has to take off his or her mask. The winner goes on to the next round, a week later. And the grand prize? It's a book contract.
FUCKING AWESOME.

Peru's Lucha Libro is kind of like that, without the violence. It's literary "wrestling." New writers don masks, and head onto a stage where they’re given three random words, a laptop hooked up to a gigantic screen, and five minutes to write a short story. At the end of a match, the losing writer has to take off his or her mask. The winner goes on to the next round, a week later. And the grand prize? It's a book contract.
