Lumikki backstory yaaay… content warning for uh, mariticide and infanticide. Or just generally murder.
Alright so Lumikki, actually named Hellebore, wasn’t always the strange cryptid of a wyverian everyone knows of today. They used to be shockingly normal. They used to be a baker, they had a partner, a child. They had a life.
Their partner was Chalcedony, a Rathalos-based wyverian, and their daughter was Poppy-Jasper, a vibrant little girl and a perfect little mix of the two, the light of both of their lives.
Everything is good for a while, they’re a happy family.
Everything starts going downhill when Hellebore gets sick. They start coughing a lot, getting weaker and more irritable, to the point it impedes their work and Chalcedony puts them on bed rest.
As they’re on bed rest, it happens too fast. Their colors are changing, slowly at first, but noticeably. They keep getting worse and worse by the day, more confused and forgetful, though they don’t forget their love for their family…most of the time.
“Papa,” Poppy chirps to her father one night. “Is Baba gonna be okay?” Young as she is, the girl is observant. She’s noticed her Baba’s declining health and weird behavior.
“Of course they will, my little love. Baba is going to get better. Baba is strong.” Chalcedony rubs his little hatchling’s head, trying his best to reassure the girl. He just has to have hope, hope that his spouse will get better.
But Hellebore doesn’t get better. They just keep getting worse.
It all culminates one night when Poppy sneaks into her Baba’s room. She was scared. She had a nightmare. She just wanted to visit her Baba.
The door opens with a soft creak, and the patter of tiny feet sounds on the wooden floor.
“Baba?” Poppy whispers into the dark, and is met with no response but the glow of two sickly red-purple eyes and eyespots from where her Baba should have been lying on the spare bed.
There’s only a thin shaft of warm light seeping into Hellebore’s room from the livingroom, where Chalcedony is dozing in front of the hearth, lighting up just a little bit of the room and leaving the rest clouded in shadow.
Poppy tries again. “Baba?”
She’s met with a deep, low growl and she steps back.
The girl doesn’t have time to do anything short of scream before teeth are wrapped around her arm and the pain is unbearable.
“BABA!! PAPA!!” Poppy shrieks.
Chalcedony gets there too late. He flings open the door and all he sees is his beloved spouse, bloody and dripping this horrible purple foam, crouched over the unmoving body of their sweet little girl.
“…Hellie?” He doesn’t want to believe what he’s seeing. “Poppy?” He steps forward, extending a clawed hand.
He’s the next to suffer under Hellebore’s teeth, mauled by the sick lover who had loved him and whom he had loved for so long.
Perhaps as a final act of love, after holding on for so long, they flee the scene, leaving nothing but shed spikes and memories. They don’t stick around long enough to make sure they’d killed them.
Hellebore, after mauling and presumably killing her loved ones, wakes up gog-knows-where and how long after, coated in blood, sleeping next to the half-eaten body of a small monster.
From then on, they don’t consider themself Hellebore anymore. They don’t deserve that name—or any name at all.
They wander awhile and eventually find a dead Hunter, assumedly young and inexperienced, and they take the weapons, dual blades, from their corpse, as well as some of their armor, marking the start of their journey as a “Hunter”.
Their time being Frenzied seems to have…knocked something loose in their head. They stop talking, stop being something. They’ve started to be what we know of nowadays, the riddle-speaking stranger who stays on the very fringes of society.
They find Tuuli some years into their hunting, while they’re sculking and sneaking around a port city they don’t bother to know the name of. The Grimalkyne was a stowaway from the New World, hidden in the cargo hold and escaped into the port.
Lumikki proposes a deal—Tuuli gets them their information on quests, Lumikki does the rest.
Their relationship is tentative at first, with Tuuli being more “normal” than Lumikki and at first very much freaked out by them, but they work together well enough. Tuuli has since gotten used to their oddities.
Tuuli and everyone else still don’t know Lumikki’s name or their story, but now you do :)
