Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer - A really good example of bio horror, really creepy and mysterious. There are sequels but it works just as well as a stand alone.

The Only Good Indians by Steven Graham Jones - More of a supernatural slasher so it wasn’t exactly my style but it’s very well executed. Really gory and steeped in folklore.

Leech by Hiron Ennes - This one is GROSSSSSSS. Modern sci-fi gothic with an intriguing setting and some really gnarly scares. The characters are the real stars of the show here though, super compelling in a way that really makes you excited to keep reading.

The Sworn Soldier series by T. Kingfisher - I’m a T. Kingfisher glazer and these books are really entertaining with some genuinely unsettling moments. The characters and the narration really take center stage, with the POV character having a really endearing voice. I’d say the first and third novellas are the highlights, with the second being a little forgettable, though I do remember still liking it.

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher - More Kingfisher I knowwww, shes really good okay!! I don’t remember much about this one but it was very atmospheric at times and again some very endearing characters.

Walking Practice by Dolki Min - Less horror and more black comedy, this book was really entertaining and still had plenty of disturbing elements.

The Troop by Nick Cutter - I never finished this one because it grossed me out really bad and I never got back around to it. This one’s really great at making you absolutely dread turning the page so definitely ideal if you want a scare.

Obligatory Imajica by Clive Barker - Yeah, news flash, Imajica is really good and I like it, but while it has horror elements it’s not strictly part of the genre. So instead I’d like to recommend Barker’s other work. Notably the Hellbound Heart and the Books of Blood anthology series.

Anything by Junji Ito - Seriously, he’s considered one of the best voices in horror manga and horror period for a reason. I recommend Uzumaki and Gyo especially if you want to gross yourself out.

Batman: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison - Scrubby what are you talking about this is a Batman comic. LISTEN listen listen hear me out, it’s the art, it’s all about the art. This book is such a surreal, grim ride and while I’m still not sure if it’s a good BATMAN story it’s exactly the kind of mind-melting, darkly beautiful horror I gravitate towards.

There are of course plenty of books out there I have not read so if I find something I think you’d like I’ll let you know!!!
