Parallel Session of DR. Diane Dekker.
She presented her paper titled, “Finally Shedding the Past: Filipino Teachers Negotiate Their Identities Within a New Mother-Tongue-Based Multilingual Education Policy Landscape”. Her paper was about language issues in education which raises challenges because of the diversity of the multilingual world. In her study, she conducted interviews on teachers and principals from six different schools and gather information about how students perform in class based on the language they are using as a medium of instruction. As a result, students and teachers are more comfortable in using their mother tongue language rather than the English language. Students can freely share their ideas in class using their mother tongue language thus, there is a more interactive class discussion.
