“ still here, i see. ”
it’s not a question, can’t even be remotely interpreted as such. it’s a statement, a confirmation, an addition to an ever-growing library of assumptions verified and/or discarded and observations patterned. lang possesses all the qualities of a good agent ; keen mind, solid, trustworthy, empathetic, committed to the work, to the people affected, a good person to have in the room to bounce ideas off of. god knows alex has done that various times already, lang asking just the right questions, keeping up better than anyone else in this office could ever hope to do.
this job is her life. alex can relate ( can’t relate quite as easily to the way lang seems to have succeeded in holding onto her femininity in a thoroughly male-dominated field of work, both in the way she dresses and the way she conducts herself, no excuses, no apologies, no regrets, no harshness, no sharp edges, but still strong ). this job is what they have, this is what they do, this is what they’re good at, each in their own way.
--------- this is why they’re still in the field office at eleven o’clock in the fucking evening when everyone else has gone home for the night.
“ thought i was the last one left. what are you working on? ”
