“Brushing our teeth together?”

Frank hums and kisses the top of her head. Moves back, just to look her in the eyes. “Yes. Sharing the little things.” His hand comes up to rest around her neck, thumb running along her throat. “We’d make coffee together. Eat breakfast. I’d pack us both leftover soup for lunch.”

She swallows. “I like that.” Her eyes shine.

“Mel…” He sighs. In the morning light, it finally starts to feel real. “I love you.”

“Good.” Mel rises to kiss him softly on the lips. “I love you too.”

It sits perfectly in his chest. He rests his forehead against hers. “Sometimes I’d imagine dragging myself out of bed, but not before kissing you on the cheek, not wanting to subject you to morning breath.” Mel rolls her eyes, and Frank grins wider. “And as I wave goodbye,” he says, leaning to whisper into her ear, “you’d laugh, bright just like the sun. And I’d miss you when I left and pretend to be surprised when you texted telling me you missed me too.” Mel laughs, just like he imagined, and kisses his chin. Frank smirks. “You’d attached a picture too. You, on our bed, wearing only my shirt.”

Her eyes sparkle. “I think I can make that happen.” Her fingers tangle in his hair. “Want to take it now while the lighting is good - ”

He swallows her promise with his tongue, leading her right back to the bedroom.

(Several months later, when Frank leaves Mel freshly fucked in bed before a night shift, he’ll receive a text, with a photo attached: Mel, hair spread out like a halo, his shirt slipping down her shoulders, the tease of her hand slipping between her thighs.

Frank proposes in the morning.)
