A question full of curiosity that can a transgender give birth to a child revolves around the minds of many. The answer usually given by experts is “no”. Gender change surgery is not new; it has been undertaken by several numbers of people around the world. A survey was done and it reported that 1 out of 11900 males and 1 out of 30400 females feel the need of getting sex change operation.

 When the sex change operation is done, only external genitalia are constructed but they are not sex glands of the other sex. A sex gland or gonad is endocrine gland which produces sex cells for an organism. In the females, they are called egg cells and in males, it is termed as sperm.

 Why a person with sex change cannot become pregnant?

 It is said by the doctors that before sex change operation, people can preserve their sperm or eggs as before that the system is completely viable and sperm can be used later when needed. It can also be done with the help of surrogate mother as the sperm can be used to give birth to a child. The reason that one cannot get pregnant is that a man who changes his sex and becomes female would still be able to contribute sperm and a female who becomes male will only be able to produce eggs. Sex change operation never gives ovaries or testicles.  

 The operation that a person undergoes is removing the testes and transforming the vagina instead of a penis or vice versa. A trans woman which means a male who becomes female does not have any real womb so they cannot become pregnant. If a person is genetically female but wants to be a male- in cases like this females would not have completely developed wombs. Womb transplantation is a very lengthy and complicated process as the organ is very close to a number of blood vessels and it is quite risky as well.

 He/ she might become a female sexually and emotionally but would not get pregnant. If a person by genetics is male, he can never carry a child within him even after getting operated as they don't have a uterus to keep the baby. A baby would not be able to grow and feed in the body of a male. Men's body is not build to bear the pain of giving birth to a child.
