6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
not really, i don't plan my reading very far ahead, i just kind of put things on my to-read list and then pick from it at random when i want something new to read.
10. What was your favorite new release of the year?
revelator: I didn't actually read anything that came out this year, but 2021 is close enough. this was really well done and I enjoyed it!
12. Any books that disappointed you?
going to try to answer this differently than the "least favorite" question
never let me go: I read this after reading klara and the sun, having been told it was a better one of his books. it was fine, I had no problems with it, but it just didn't quite hit with me. the characters didn't feel vivid enough, I guess? this wasn't a deep disappointment but the book wasn't earth-shattering, and mostly it reminded me of the YA novel the house of the scorpion, which I feel like dealt with a very similar concept in a more engaging way. admittedly I have not reread that book since I was like 12, so I may be a bit biased.

kind of? i reread most of good omens but never quite finished it, and i spent a lot of january listening to david sedaris audiobooks of books i had already read

i'm going to go with top three because my list of books read is kind of short: axiom's end by l/indsay e/llis; raybearer by jordan ifueko; confessions of a failed southern lady by florence king
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
this is just a book that i picked up off a "new releases" shelf at the library so i may be unfair in being so mean to it, but i HATED let's get back to the party by zak salih. it's supposed to be about two gay men navigating the assimilation vs. anti-assimilation issue in the wake of the 2015 scotus ruling, but the characters feel flat and their convictions apparently rule their lives but there's no real clarity on why they have these convictions. and probably the worst thing about it is that the anti-assimilationist character was completely apolitical, he just hated gay marriage and only cared about random hookups, and his cardinal sin within the narrative was ignoring the tragic parts of gay history. genuinely what is an anti-assimilationist character without radical politics. shut up. i probably wouldn't have finished it if it hadn't been the one book i brought with me on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods lol
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
i don't pay a ton of attention to hype, and most big-name books i read were pretty good, but i thought honey girl by morgan rogers was just okay. the writing style wasn't for me, but i think the big problem was that it was sold as primarily an f/f romance when the bulk of the book (and the better-written parts) were more about mental health issues. so maybe just misleading hype?
