The terrace was quiet, bathed in silver moonlight, the night air carrying a delicate chill that danced across your skin. You sat at the edge, legs tucked close, eyes half-closed as if absorbing the world’s hush after a long, tiring day. The wind teased strands of your hair, brushing your cheeks softly, and the pale light kissed every curve of your face. In that moment, the world felt suspended, each heartbeat stretching into eternity.
Sylus had arrived quietly, almost instinctively searching for you, and when he finally stepped onto the terrace, his breath caught. There you were, illuminated by the moon, serene and untouched by the noise of life. His gaze softened, fixed entirely on you. For him, the moon above was irrelevant. The true moon, the only light he needed, was right here on this terrace, in your presence. Time paused; nothing else existed beyond you.
Watching you like this, Sylus felt something rare and unspoken unfurl inside him. Every hardship, every obstacle he had faced, the pain, the chaos, suddenly seemed bearable if it meant he could return here, to this moment, to this sight. Seeing your peaceful face became a salve, a source of healing he hadn’t known he craved. The world could break him, yet the memory of this exact scene would piece him together again and again. He didn’t just admire you; he revered you, and it was a reverence that felt sacred, almost spiritual.
Lost in you, he barely noticed the cool breeze or the faint scent of night flowers, his attention wholly absorbed by the subtle rise and fall of your chest, the way your lashes fluttered against your cheeks, the delicate curve of your lips as you exhaled in quiet contentment.
Then, imperceptibly, a presence broke the cocoon of your solitude. You felt it first, a gentle awareness, a prickle along your skin, like someone’s gaze had found you. Slowly, you opened your eyes, and there he was, just a few steps behind, standing in the moonlight, watching you with a softness so intense it nearly hurt. Sylus blinked, caught between reality and the spellbound trance he had wrapped himself in, and in that instant, the night seemed both infinite and intimate, charged with a quiet devotion that only he could feel.
“Lost in the moon?” you whispered, a faint smile brushing your lips.
Sylus’ lips curved in a near-smile, but his eyes never left yours. “No,” he murmured, voice low, reverent. “The moon is here… with me.”
Without a word, he moved closer and sat beside you. The night seemed to shrink even further as you rested your head against his shoulder, feeling the steady warmth radiating from him. His hand brushed gently over yours, and finally, he spoke, voice low and tender.
“Does it feel nice to sit here under the moon?”
You smiled softly, leaning into him. “Yes… sitting under the moonlight always makes me feel at peace.”
A slow smile curved his lips, and he bent to place a gentle kiss on your forehead. “I guess I should join you here often,” he murmured.
“Alright,” you replied, lifting your head slightly to look at him. “Then make sure to come here after a week. It will be a full moon...”
Sylus’ eyes softened, dark and intense. “I’ll be here,” he promised, his gaze unwavering, full of devotion.
The next evening, when Sylus wandered through the market and his gaze fell upon a moon-shaped jhumka, he stilled, struck by the memory of you beneath that night sky, the way your face had glowed in serenity, your hair catching the wind, your eyes soft with peace as if the moon itself had chosen to rest in your expression. He didn’t buy the jhumka. No, his heart whispered that something so sacred shouldn’t come from a stall. If it was meant for you, then it had to be forged by his own hands, touched by the fire of his devotion. So, he returned to his forge, silver laid out before him, the flames dancing like his restless heartbeat. Each time he struck the metal, your face flashed in his mind, your quiet smile, the calm in your eyes, the way your presence hushed the chaos of the world.
It was as if he wasn’t crafting an ornament at all, but a fragment of you. He worked with delicate precision, shaping the silver into a glowing moon, adorning it with tiny shining ornaments that would catch the light the way your smile did, so that whenever you laughed, the jhumka would glimmer as though it had been waiting to echo your joy. He could not stop smiling as he worked. Anticipation swelled in his chest, eager for the day he would place it in your hands, eager to see how it would sway against your ear and magnify the beauty he already saw every time he looked at you. When the final curve was polished and the last ornament set, Sylus held the jhumka up to the light, and for a moment he swore he wasn’t looking at jewelry at all, he was looking at you, your peaceful face captured in silver, serene yet radiant. He whispered to the empty forge, almost trembling with quiet joy, “It’s another piece of you.”
A week passed, and on the night of the full moon, Sylus kept his promise. The air was cool, carrying the faint fragrance of night jasmine drifting from some unseen corner, and the terrace glowed under a silvery wash of moonlight. The sky stretched wide, velvet and endless, and the stars looked like scattered ornaments waiting to crown this night. The moon itself hung round and luminous, pouring its quiet light across the world like a blessing. You sat there, still as if afraid to disturb the serenity, and when Sylus stepped onto the terrace, it felt as though the silence acknowledged him too.
He walked over and sat beside you, his warmth grounding against the chill of night. Without a word, your head naturally found its way onto his shoulder, and he let out a breath that seemed to soften everything around you. After a long, quiet pause where only the sounds of the night lingered, he leaned slightly and whispered against your hair, “You know, I don’t feel enough moonlight today.”
You laughed softly, teasing, “Come on, Sylus, it’s so full and glowy tonight, you can’t be joking.” But before your laughter could bloom, his fingers brushed against your cheek, tucking away a loose strand of hair behind your ear with a tenderness that made your heartbeat stumble. His touch lingered only a second, then he lifted his hand again, this time carrying a jhumka shaped like the moon above. Silver, delicate, adorned with tiny shining stones that seemed to breathe with light, as though he had stolen a piece of the sky to gift you.
He leaned in gently, helping you wear it, his movements slow, reverent, as if adorning not just your ear but something sacred. Then, with a quiet smile, he lifted a small hand mirror, holding it so you could see yourself. Your gaze caught the reflection, the moonlight cascading down your face, and on your ear, that luminous jhumka shining as though it was always meant for you.
A tear pricked in your eye, trembling before it slipped down. You didn’t know how to process it, the sheer devotion, the way love could forge something so beautiful, so eternal. You realized then that this wasn’t just silver and stone. It was a piece of his heart, shaped for you alone. Sylus noticed instantly. His thumb came up to wipe your tear away, his eyes locking onto yours with a depth that steadied your trembling chest. Then he murmured, low but sure, “Now I feel full. The light, the glow, now it’s enough for me.”
Your lips trembled, and an ache bloomed in your chest, overflowing into a warmth that made your vision blur again. Overwhelmed, you wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly as if to fuse yourself with him. Pressing a soft, trembling kiss on his forehead, you whispered against his skin, “This jhumka will be worn on my ear, but it will always be carried by my heart.”
His arms tightened around you, his voice husky when he replied, “And you have my heart, jaan.”
You pulled back only to trace your fingertips slowly across his face, memorizing the lines of his jaw, the slope of his nose, the softness in his eyes. He leaned into your touch as though it was the only place he belonged, whispering, “We came here to watch the moon.”
Your lips curved into a faint, teary smile as you looked at him, eyes unwavering. “I don’t want to look anywhere else,” you breathed, “when my real moon is right in front of me.”
