i think 12's regeneration speech is so over hated. I think his speech is a beautiful acceptance of his new life and a perfect send off to the character we've gotten to know over 50+ years up to that point. I think the Doctor after being so assured he was going to finally let himself rest, desperately need a reminder of what made themself who they are and why they keep running. I think it's perfectly in line with the message of the episode. I don't think it's pretentious because The Doctor has earned the right to be pretentious about his life every now and then. They're literally a mythical being, being called a lonely god, having such an air of legend around them and having made such an impact on the universe that yeah, when the stars align children can hear their name.
