how hot are: jimmy the duke BRANSON
Jimmy:
Not My Type | Alright | Cute | Adorable | Pretty | Gorgeous | LORD MERCY
(he’s not right for me, but he’s adorable and precious and very much right for Thomas and that’s what matters)
The Duke:
Not My Type | Alright | Cute | Adorable | Pretty | Gorgeous | LORD MERCY
Branson:
Not My Type (...now that he’s been spiritually castrated) | Alright | Cute | Adorable | Pretty | Gorgeous | LORD MERCY (when he first appeared with fire in his belly and whisked Sybil off to Ireland)
what are your favorite thomas fics?? have you written any? 😊
!!! i’m new to barrow fanfic but my favourites so far are all the works in the mr barrow and mr kent /brightonverse series. i love them so much. i also really like the dancing is not a metaphor and ... a lot of others. there’s this modern au one with an extremely good, modern backstory for thomas’s scarred hand, which i appreciated.
i’ve written these two tiny ones so far and am working on more. i spend most of my time, to be honest, writing non-fandom things inspired by fandom, so that i can keep building my portfolio and getting publications while also having fun.
your headcanon posts (as you know) make my life and bring me so much joy and imo you MAKE the thomas barrow tag. your insight and thoughtfulness and depth and empathy are always so gorgeous please never stop being you
thank you so muchhh!!!! i feel so empowered. thank you
fools by troye sivan is thomas af imo give it a listen sometime if you'd like✨
i definitely will omg thank you. fandom song recs keep me alive

hi!! okay so i read the thomas barrow show and it got me thinking: basically in the fic (and in canon pretty much) it's implied lots of people at downton knew about thomas' sexuality long before the jimmy incident (ex. mrs. patmore telling daisy he's not for her in season one) - any headcanons/thoughts on how???
hello again! i love when you ask me downton things. [shines.]
he just doesn’t hide it. it’s like we’re always saying; without ever directly saying it, he’s defiantly open about what he is; as open as one can safely be about a thing that could get them arrested.
he doesn’t bother to disguise any of the social cues that identify him as, in the slang of the time, lavender. he spends most of his time with the women, does not forge friendships with the male staff for the most part, and as far as we know, he’s never made any effort to appear remotely interested in girls - except that one time he wanted to upset william. he doesn’t join in when girls are the topic of discussion, and he’s never shown any intention of marrying. they’ve lived with and known him almost ten years by season 1; during all that time, it seems he’s kept his private life private, spent his days off alone (and probably in york), and never introduced them to any of his friends, let alone a sweetheart.
and then there’s just that... sense, that most wordly people will get, that perhaps someone is not straight, and which is hardly a modern invention - people are usually able to tell when someone is a bit different. mrs patmore and mrs hughes are two very worldly women, who have seen a lot; carson, while a disgusting homophobe, used to be in the theatre; bates was in the army; and so on
the upper classes have always been more open about the existence of homosexuality, whatever their views on the matter - largely because they’re given more access to education, and you can only read so much before encountering some gay. especially if you’re reading the greek epics.
the crawleys will also more than likely have half covert-half openly gay acquaintances of their own class, given we know from robert’s own lips that he knew plenty of gay people at eton-- and i’m pretty sure lady violet lived through the oscar wilde trials? they're unlikely to miss the signs in their handsome footman thomas, so long as he’s not actively trying to hide it. (the duke of crowborough, on the other hand, is a serious closet case, i think mostly just because he needs to marry for money, and being openly lavender would make that much more difficult for him)
it makes sense that the younger, working class maids wouldn’t pick up these cues, because these are topics which young girls especially were shielded from, for fear of damaging their ~delicate sensibilities, and they lack the access to education to be able to discover it through their own reading like the crawley ladies.
it makes sense especially for daisy, who is characterised as having zero worldly wisdom from the start, though she picks it up quickly!
(worth noting: while almost everyone knew gay men existed pre-wwii, many had no idea lesbians were a thing, allowing us to completely slip under the radar for much of history. queen victoria had a bicurious husband she supposedly used to gift erotic etchings of young men to, but when presented with a scandal about two ladies having sex, she point blank refused to believe such a thing could be possible. straight ppl are amazing.)
please bless us with some thomas headcanons any headcanons if you have them!!! for example i've always really thought thomas likes chocolate for some reason like its his fucking weakness. also ily
this is the nicest ask i’ve ever received from someone who wasn’t contractually obliged, under the rules of Friendship, to send me nice asks from time to time.
ily2 and i have so many. are you prepared? [scar voice] be prepared. i’ll start with just the one now but expect more later pls check back thanks
on the question of sweets:
he does like chocolate although he rarely gets to have it, given the folks upstairs don’t order it often and he rarely has any money spare (sadly he keeps blowing it on, you know, ill-fated black market ventures, and... the other thing, which we will not mention now)
he’s probably been in service at downton since he was at least 15 so tbh mrs patmore’s cooking is probably his favourite. i imagine when he was younger, cuter and she didn’t know what a colossal dick he could be, she might have let him sample stuff like she does the maids and other young footmen later on
for some reason i think his favourites are the little sweet jellies, turkish delight (i didn’t intend this as a joke when i typed it but suddenly there it is), stuff like that. he definitely stole them when he could get away with it, back before he became Sad Thomas, and stopped eating or doing anything remotely enjoyable except smoking alone in the cold.
i love you and i'm glad you made that post sharing what you felt!! i really don't understand why people are getting so defensive but their name-calling and hostility really isn't necessary!! the fact that they're so defensive reflects more on them than anything. proud of you for staying respectful even in response to some really idiotic anons. keep doing you.
Thank you so much. I love you too. This means so much to me, more than you could ever know. I really needed this thank you so much.
