“I’m... I’m so sorry, Vee,” Raine quietly rasped out, fighting against the tight lump that had formed in their throat. But, the former head witch knew their apology would mean nothing now. Words spoken in a selfish desire to relieve the guilt that had pressed heavy onto their shoulders when they had learned what that tyrant had done to the young basilisk -- to all of their kind-- yet they should have known by now that it wouldn’t have changed anything. Not for them, and certainly not for Vee.
“I knew what Belos was doing. I knew where he kept you-- where he kept all of you, and I had done nothing to stop it." There was a faint quiver in their voice, the bard’s green eyes unable to meet Vee’s gaze. “I believed the narrative about your kind without bothering to look further, and--” Their jaw tightly set itself, a long, slow breath drawn into their chest as they shook their head. Another failure in their broken plan, another blind eye turned from those who had truly needed their help where they had offered none. “I don’t expect you to forgive my ignorance, but I promise you, Vee; I won’t just sit idly by again. We will find a way to help the others.”
