"Why did you leave without saying goodbye?"
Her voice is clipped, short and high twisted tight with her not quite there tears. She pulls the covers up just a little higher over her body to put something, anything, between them.
"Christ," Beth releases in a heavy exhale. "Don’t fucking cry, Ali."
She takes a step forward, and Alison’s fists clench tight around the fabric, suffocating it between her fingers. Beth’s smile is dry, amused at her own incompetence and how vast it really is. “Ali, please, I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t think you’d wake up until after I got back.”
She sheepishly pulls a bag of donuts from behind her back, shoulder raised in a self-conscious bracing. “I was trying to do something special but I guess I fucked that up too, huh?” The corner of her lips pull up in an apologetic smile, lopsided and hopeful and Alison only keeps her defensive position for a few extra seconds before deflating with a sigh.
"I thought you went on call Beth!” she huffed. “I thought you were going to go running into some…” she threw her hand up as she searched for a scenario. “some murderer’s lair never to be seen again without even a GD goodbye.”
Beth’s eyebrows raise. “Lair?”
Alison scowls and chucks her pillow across the room. Beth laughs, blocks it with her free hand and grins over at Alison. “You’re lucky I have precious cargo here or you’d be toast,” she mutters, lifting the bag up. “These things are too damn good to waste. But…I guess I’ll just have to eat them all myself.”
Alison’s shoulders drop in an impending pout. Beth smirks and shrugs her shoulders. “Pillow throwers don’t get anything.”
She barely has time to brace before Alison is diving off the bed and clinging around her neck to tackle her to the ground.
