It is almost Friday! Thank goodness. I have run out of podcasts and am not quite ready to commit to re-listening to any of my favorite audiobooks again, which means drowning out my coworkers has gotten significantly harder. Cubicles and shared office environments are such a unique joy, they really are.
I have decided to celebrate almost Friday and generalized back-to-schoolness (wow, that happened early this year) with kidfic. I have already posted things out of order and confused myself, so I might as well commit to it.
@lost-gryphin wanted to see Lance and the lab safety speech. Â
Boston, March 1925
âSafety in the laboratory is everyoneâs responsibility,â Lance said solemnly, looking at the assembled toys. Heâd gathered up Nighty Knight, Mr. Bear and Diego the stuffed dog.  All four of them surrounded Lanceâs Junior Potions Kit with evident fascination. âOur work is âsperimental, but our pro-s --â Lance frowned.  âOur processes are not,â he finished.
Dindrane had the cleverest son in the entire world. She was sure of it.  Behind her, Robert was practically vibrating in glee. He pulled her into a hug and kissed her neck.  Dindrane could feel his smile against her skin. He was always delighted when one of the children showed the slightest interest in potions.
âNo eating or drinking in the lab. EVER,â Lance said, brandishing a finger in the direction of his toys. âNo tasting your potions ingredients, either, âcause thatâs eating and thatâs bad.â
âWell,â Dindrane murmured. âHeâs not wrong.â
âHush,â Robert murmured back.
âYou should always keep your space clean,â continued Lance. He had, to his credit, cleared out a six foot patch of carpet to set up his Junior Potions Kit. The rest of his room looked like a tornado had hit it, but that was par for the course with Lance. âFor safety!â
âAgain,â said Dindrane. âNot wrong.â
âI should have him give this talk to my staff,â said Robert.
âYou should always do the reading, âcause itâs homework,â Lance told his toys. He pulled out the instruction sheet that had come with the Junior Potions Kit and peered at it. âThis should be interesting,â he said, which was exactly what Robert said right before he tried something he wasnât sure would work.
He really was the best of both of them, Dindrane thought. Arthur was his fatherâs son, for all his talent with wandless spellcasting. He was serious and studious, her shy boy.  Gwen was a Graves through and through. But Lance was the one who took after both of them.
Sometimes Dindrane regretted stopping at three children. She and Robert made beautiful, clever babies.
Case in point: her baby boy, who was carefully combining two of the little potions into a larger bottle.
âHm,â said Lance, when nothing happened. âI think maybe our âsperiment didnât work,â he said. He gave the larger bottle an experimental shake -- which was definitely on Robertâs list of Bad Experimental Procedures -- and crowed when the bottle began to fizz.
âIs it supposed to do that?â Dindrane asked.
â... No,â said her husband. âNo, it is not.  Mijo, why donât you let me take a look at --â
âIâm you, PapĂĄ!â Lance said excitedly, gesturing with the potions bottle.
The fizzing turned into a geyser of bright blue foam.
âUh oh,â said Lance.
And some days Dindrane had no problems remembering why theyâd stopped at three. She looked over her foam covered husband and child.  âHe gets this from you,â she told Robert.

I think the company I work for has been cursed to suffer eternal IT issues. Anyone know a good counterspell? (Normally, I would suggest sacrificing an IT guy or two, but they actually seem like okay dudes. Not great at what they do, but not the douchecanoes I usually encounter. Itâs weird.)
Anyway, have some comment fic. @lost-gryphin wanted to see more of Renault and Hughes, chaotic forces for good from the comment fic where Gravesâ team throws down with the FBCVNMO. (For those of you who need a refresher, Sebastien Renault is the Canadian cursebreaker on loan to Gravesâ team. My apologies to Canada for the metaphors.)

The Woolworth Building, October 1930
There were probably more terrifying sights than Win Hughes sidling up and smiling, but in the heat of the moment, Sebastien found himself completely unable to think of a single one.
âHey, New Guy,â she said.
Still. Â The proper forms had to be observed. Â
âWhat do you want, Hughes?â
Hughesâ toothy grin went distinctively waheela-like and terrifying. Â âI thought you and me could have some fun,â she said.
âAuror Hughes, are you propositioning me at work?â Sebastien asked, faux-scandalized. Â âHow delicious. Â I love it. Â Take me to a supply closet and ravish me.â
âI can do better than a supply closet, New Guy,â Win informed him. Â âAnd I wasnât talking about that kind of fun.â
âPity,â Sebastien said, with genuine regret. Â Win looked like sheâd be fun in bed. Â âWhat sort of fun were you talking about, then?â
âI thought maybe you and me could remind the fucksticks from Alphabet Soup about MACUSAâs policy on upsetting Credence Graves.â
MACUSAâs policy on upsetting Credence Graves was actually pretty simple, and could be summed up in exactly one word: donât.
Having met the man, Sebastien could understand why the entire American wizarding government had developed that particular policy in the first place. Â It wasnât just because Graves was a scary motherfucker who would rip anyone who upset his adorable husband to shreds. Â Nor was it because Credence was one of those genuinely nice, kind-hearted people who would go out of his way to help you. Â No, it was because Credence was fucking terrifying when he wanted to be. Â Sebastien had seen actual U.S. Senators flee at the mere sight of Credence.
They fled from Tina, too, although Sebastien suspected that had less to do with Tinaâs overall terrifying competence and was based purely on the fact that Tina was unstoppable once she really got started.
Sebastien felt his own mouth stretch into a waheela grin to match Hughesâ. Â âFun indeed,â he purred. Â âIt would be my genuine pleasure.â
Win smirked. Â âI thought youâd say that.â
*
Tina punched him in the arm. Â âYou asshole!â she yelled. Â âI canât believe you didnât invite me along!â
âSo pretty,â Sebastien sighed. Â âAnd so violent.â
Tina punched him again. Â âMy looks have nothing to do with this!â she declared. Â âCredence is my little brother. Â Mine and Queenieâs. Â You should have included me.â
âYou should have included both of us,â Queenie corrected.
Sebastien eyed her warily. Â Queenie was less prone to punching than Tina was, but that didnât mean she was any less dangerous than her sister.
âUntwist your panties,â Hughes advised.
Sebastien took a prudent step out of the line of fire. Â He adored Win, he really did, but he had no desire to get killed because she was too crazy to recognize how much danger sheâd just put herself in.
âI beg your pardon?â Queenie asked, her voice as cold as a Saskatoon winter.
âI know the two of you are Palugâs big sisters,â Win told them. Â âEverybody does. Â Youâre the obvious suspects. Â Now you can say you had nothing to do with this.â
âOh,â said Sebastien. Â âWere we supposed to be subtle? Â You didnât tell me we were supposed to be subtle.â
Hughes narrowed her eyes. Â âWhat did you do, New Guy?â
Director Graves appeared in the door of the conference room they were hiding in. Â âRenault!â he barked. Â âHughes! Â Get your asses in my office now.â
âI was not subtle,â Sebastien said.
Director Graves snorted. Â âYou really fucking werenât. Â You practically signed your work.â
âSeriously?â asked Hughes.
âIâm an artist,â Sebastien told her. Â âItâs what we do.â
âIâm going to fucking kill you, New Guy,â Win said.
âNo,â Director Graves said. Â âIâm going to fucking kill both of you.â
