Nobody's Dumb Enough to Worship Idols Anymore?
I've heard it and I believed it. Until the past few years. "Idolatry? Nobody worships idols anymore, that would be stupid. Nobody bows and prays to statues, that's ridiculous". Of course it is. And nobody does worship statues. But... some people still worship idols, only they're not statues. They're human.
No, people don't literally, physically bow and pray to them, but just watch how people act around some famous people. Yeah, how people treat the rich and famous, celebrities, that's amusing. That's bad enough... I mean they ARE only ordinary human beings, after all, they just happen to be either extra beautiful or extra talented and more successful in their field of expertise than some other people, but they're still just ordinary humans. But I'm not even harping on that aspect, as much as political leaders and/or religious public figures.
Oh my land! Certain political leaders, popular religious figures... Some large groups of people act like these people are the literal second coming. Like they descended on Earth from the clouds and they walk on water, the way people talk like they can do no wrong and can fix every problem.
Can we just dial it back a bit and get a grip on reality, here? We're not talking about Marvel Comics superheroes, here...
"Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's SUPERMAN!"
"Call Batman, he'll save us!" Maybe Captain America. Wonder Woman?
No, how about we'll stop bickering amongst ourselves about which one of our human idols is going to save us and unite to save ourselves? The rich and famous are good at being rich and famous. That's it. WE'RE the ones in the trenches actually making things happen. They're standing up in front looking and acting big and important, saying big and important sounding things, putting on a good show, maybe making some important sounding decisions.
But who's actually doing everything? WE ARE! Us regular, common everyday Joes. They would have NOTHING without the rest of us. Nothing. WE'RE the superheroes, not them. All their glory, pomp and circumstance is just for show. It's just appearances, illusion. All the money, expensive clothes, makeup, multiple million, billion dollar real estate, car collections, private jets, yachts... It all makes them LOOK bigger and better than everyone else. They're not.
We're the backbone of our communities, our countries, our world. Everything runs as smoothly and peacefully as WE make it. They have little to do with it. They can TELL us whatever. They can tell us all our problems are because of this group or that group and nothing will be right until THEY come along and save us. They can fill us with all kinds of propaganda that things are so much better because of what THEY did.
Don't believe it. Don't hand over all the credit for all your blood, sweat and tears to people who may have never known what it's like to get their hands a little dirty. This is OUR world. THEY live the life they live because of US. Not the other way around.
I say, we take the bull by the horns and we make our own lives what we want it to be. Stop being affected by the fear mongering propaganda that our world is being destroyed by those who don't see things just like we do, who don't look, act, talk, and think exactly like we do.
BULLSHIT! I've lived for 59 years surrounded by people who didn't agree with me on a lot of things. While it might be a bit annoying sometimes, I must admit that not only did I live through it just fine, I'd go so far as to say I'm a better person because of it. I have learned a LOT from all those annoying people. And I would say the majority of what I learned is that I was wrong about more than I thought.
Let's get over ourselves, get over this notion that while the "Large and in charge" might indeed be in charge for a few practical reasons, they're not as large as they appear to us, nor as large as they like to lead us to believe. For one thing, I'd bet dollars to donuts we outnumber them thousands, if not millions, to one. And yet we quiver at the site of them.
I want us to snap out of this mythological fantasy world we're living in where a small number of humans reign supreme as demi gods, that we owe homage to, with supposed superhuman power to "save" entire nations from destruction and notice everything good that ordinary humans are doing every single day, quietly, thanklessly, to keep our world running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
We might need leaders, yes, but they're not gods and they don't do everything by a long shot. They might need or cooperation whenever it's appropriate, but they don't need to be fawned over and put on pedestals like gods.
