Highlights from the NEOWIZ director's panel on narrative at G-Con 2025!
I thought what Loppers might be interested to know the most is that... Director Choi confirms that Yes, Carlo was developed independently of GDTโs Pinocchio in 2022!! When GDT Pinocchio came out they were already well into development, the entire studio was in a panicked uproar, thinking โwhat are we going to doโฆโ luckily, they didnโt scrap Carlo then lol.
They were a little upset they couldn't get the jump on players so to speak. Like the expression he used was "we lost our card". But despite the movie, it ended up being very effective anyway.
While discussing diagetics and narratives in video games, The moderator mentions that he finds it interesting that while the other directors say something about gravity or immersion, Choi, whose background is in combat (he was the former combat director for Lost Ark), responds that โPlayers should know what theyโre fighting for,โ more or less.ย (Well, what Choi says is more like "you should know why you're doing something".)
When I hear this, I think of how P gets angry at the KoP's play. [this is my personal thoughts] During the boss battles, the "subtext" is that he's fighting to save Krat - but on a personal level, I feel like he's fighting for his father.
Director Choi also mentioning that games are a good medium for non-verbal (๋น์ธ์ด์ ) storytelling. I felt this strongly about Lies of P.
Director Kay:
LOL
The other director is Lee Sang-Gyun (It seems like he prefers to go by Kay Lee in English), who was recently "inducted" into R8 and is the director of the new soulslike project from Neowiz that isn't tied to LoP. He praises Antonia's story, and they talk about the adage that constraints can often promote creativity, which can seem counterintuitive, but it's often true. (Also he said that he cried a lot lol)
Director Kay Lee talks about writing ideas down when they come to him, even if they're not "useful" in a particular project. Director Choi responds that he never writes anything down, and Director Kwon retorts that โthat's because you use me as a human notebookโ lol
To clarify to no one in particular, there were 4 directors on the panel, One, as you very well may know, is Jiwon Choi who was general director of LOP and Overture, and Kwon Byung-Soo who was LOP and Overture Narrative lead. The other two Directors, Kay Lee (Lee Sang-Gyun) and Jin Seung-Ho are new to the studio, and weren't involved with the development of LOP or Overture.
[This is a really stupid, and pretentious, comment from me, but I see Kay Lee mentioning Heavy Rain as an example as like, a creative red flag, mainly because I thought Heavy rain was complete ass LOL. (Well, it made sense for the example he was giving) Jin Seung-Ho, on the other hand, mentions Park Chan-Wook. Hmm. ]
I'm interested to see what Jin Seung-ho is going to do with this big studio budget backing him, because as far as I can see, his previous RPG Buried Stars had themes of online harassment, and was really highly acclaimed.
[very lazy fan interpretation]
[oh yeah, i should say, the english cutouts are from the browser auto-translate, i did not really do anything for this one, except interpret the sections that kind of related to LOP in this blog post. again, not very good at explaining things ]
