God save the Queen

Things have reached the point where you cannot safely use the word "heterosexual" on the eastern seaboard of Australia without running the risk of someone calling you a bigot.

Same-sex marriage is an important matter. It needs debate. It needs respectful discussion. It may even need well crafted legislation. It doesn't need hysteria. Nothing "needs" hysteria.

Saying you oppose same-sex marriage today would be like saying you loved the royals back when some of us tried very hard to get Australia a republic most of us didn't want. "Liking" the Queen was - as one commentator described it at the time - "the love that dare not speak its name."

Which is what - in the day - they called homosexuality. Ironic much?

My “unspeakable love” as a young male in Australia in the nineties was loving film and not footy. Back then, that was borderline gay. Now it's hipster. The good thing about the current furor is that I no longer care what people think about my adoration for the monarchy. Is it a flawed model? Pfft. Show me an unflawed one.
