This is my husband, age going-on 3 or nearly 4 years old (accounts for this picture vary), with his maternal grandfather. Starting at 3 he spent his summers with his grandparents fishing the waters of the Saint Lawrence River from Long Sault Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. Grandma and Grandpa ate what he caught; but would you believe, he never developed a taste for fish - even to this day. * A few years back, when we laid Grandpa to rest, we hauled our A-liner camper back up to his childhood fishing holes and camped in Grandpa's honor. By the way, Long Sault Provincial Park is beautiful and steeped in an interesting and dramatic history related to creation of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. * Maybe next Summer the boys will be ready for a road trip north to their ancestral land. And we will camp and fish just like their father did. The twins will catch northern pike, and walleye, and yellow perch. And I will fry 'em up for dinner. And we might even make their dad try a few bites. * Writing this had made me all emotional. Grandpa loved big band music, square dancing, and the cartoon King of the Hill. I can imagine his response when he found out we named our first born twin after him. And I can just SEE him taking his handkerchief out of his back pocket and wiping away some tears. And I KNOW that he is tickled pink watching his namesake, and his twin brother, fall in love with fishing they way their father did. * Excuse me while I go cry in my cornflakes for a bit.
