There is a breeze that blows through Red Rocks at night. Usually it comes about 1/3 of the way through a set, and in the spring, that breeze could come as a full wind. Sweet with a warm rain, a tease of a summer full of memories ahead. • In the summer, the breeze is thick with cigarettes, weed, even campfire smoke, a smell so nostalgic & intoxicating, it can make me cry almost instantly. It smells like childhood. Like growing up & forever. And in mid to (gulp) late august, that breeze carries the sting & the changes of an early Fall. A few leaves yellow at the tips, a sweatshirt pulled out way before you thought you needed it, a young couple in love, huddled snuggling under a rocky ledge. Change is in the air. Like the seasons… I am changing once again. Not immediately, but slowly, faintly, yellow tips on leaves, the cool of the night air, nostalgia and the racing against time. • I’ve been up here among these rocks so many times, with so many people. Celebrating, dancing, sweating, & singing with family & friends, connecting with bands I love, marking a little time & space at the top of my lungs, echoes ricocheting between these rock walls. The times that I hold closest, the ones where I feel change the sharpest, and the ones that change me… are when I’m here alone. In the breeze. In the spring anticipating summer. In the summer, bathed in cigarette & weed smoke, dancing with strangers. And most often and deepest, at the end of summer. On the edge of fall. With the breeze singing me a story of change. A new story. The same one I’ve been singing since I came here the first time. Something scary. Something special. Something magic. • “I don’t question it / I don’t mess with it / I just go / go grab it / tell your friends / tell your ma / that you love who they are / cause someday we must return the movies in our brains / and those moments we can’t fake / yes the angels never leak the expiration date / I’m an astronaut without you / we’re twisting our way to the back of the bar / yeah locking the door falling into the stall / I think I like falling in love in the bar bathroom light…” • #august #redrocks #summerforever #longlivesummer (at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChZFISpua5x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
