you seem to use gay a lot in the correct way but gay is also used as a demeaning word and is used for identification so what are your opinions on why one is okay to use (reclaim?) but the other is not? I understand wanting to be firmly identified as lesbian but on reclaiming i am fuzzy
gay wasn't originally a slur, it was a word used to mean "happy" and then it evolved to neutrally describe homosexuality, and only later did it come to mean "bad or stupid"
so in using it i'm not reclaiming it, i'm just using it as the neutral descriptor it is
queer is different because originally it meant strange or perverse, then it became a derogatory term for homosexuals in the 1920s, and only in the 1990s did reclamation of queer become popular
so there's just a completely different background to either word
that being said, i only ever use gay for the sake of conciseness, i much prefer to use "lesbian" to describe my sexuality.
